A warm welcome to new kindergarten students and their parents who attended Kindergarten Orientation at Arcadia this afternoon. We received about 30 registration cards, complete with documentation. Thank you for your attendance and assistance. It was awesome to see boys and girls lining up without much assistance to visit their new classrooms in elementary school. We wish them every success as they take their first steps into K-12 school, college, and careers to come.
As shared with them this afternoon, we are applying for a state grant to fund a full-day kindergarten class next year. If our application receives approval, Arcadia will operate an all-day kindergarten class and two half-day sessions: a.m. and p.m. We hope for the best.
Oh, you can only imagine the impact of it on students! They will have a jump start on reading, math, computers, science, social studies, PE, music, library, and social skills, not to forget lunch with the big kids in the lunchroom. Longer time to process, learn, practice, and demonstrate ability—these have been difficult in half-day programs. We will keep our patrons posted on developments.
Changes in the number of classes by grade next year:
Kindergarten: 3 half-day sessions or 1 full-day and 2 half-day session (if grant is approved)
First Grade: 3 classes
Second Grade: 3 classes
Third Grade: 3 classes
Fourth Grade: 2 classes
Fifth Grade: 2 classes
Sixth Grade: 2 classes
The faculty voted in favor of removing split classes.
New next year:
1. First Grade classes will participate in 16 weeks of dance instruction in Spring 2018, with the Tanner School of Dance, The University of Utah.
2. Granite School District will now place one Beverly Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program Specialist at each school to teach fine arts at two schools. Arcadia will have its own BTSALP Specialist, starting next year.
3. The security upgrade at Arcadia, with an office remodel, will occur this summer. The kitchen also.
4. Chromebook carts for a couple more classrooms are in the works for next year.
Come join our journey by joining the PTA and signing up to help teachers and students in classrooms.
Thank you for all you do.
