The PTSA is already working hard on various programs and activities designed to enrich Churchill students’ experience. We at the school appreciate all the hard work they do and the time they put in to plan and run their events. We had our first PTSA meeting of the year this week, and it was great to see how many parents were there.
There are a couple of things getting going now that I’d like to make everyone aware of. First, we have movie night tonight at the school. The doors will open at 6:30pm with the movie beginning at 7:00pm. We will be showing The Incredibles. There is no cost for you to bring your family; however, there will be concessions available for purchase. We moved movie night to the beginning of the school year this year because we wanted to have a fun community activity early in the year to help set a good tone for the rest of the school year. We have advertised with all three of our elementary schools, and everyone is welcome to come.
The other PTSA thing that will be coming up quickly is Reflections. Reflections entries will be due on October 6. This year’s theme is “Within Reach”. There are six different categories students can enter work in, and there is an official entry form that needs to be submitted with each piece. Students may enter each of the six categories, but they can only submit one entry per category. The categories are dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts.
Finally, the Fun Run/Halloween Hustle will be on October 5 this year. This is a great school-wide activity that has been an annual tradition at Churchill for 40 years. We will do the run and have a bar-b-que for lunch that day. The PTSA will be in need of volunteers to be out on the course through the neighborhood to help direct students around the course so they end up back at school after their run.
I will continue to encourage everyone to follow us on Facebook. If you go to the school’s website, schools.graniteschools.org/churchilljr/, and click on the Facebook icon in the upper right corner, you will be directed to our official page. Once on our Facebook page, you can click “Like”. Facebook will be the number one source for getting immediate updates and information about what’s happening at school.
Please use the student drop-off area on the west side of the school. The bus zone on the north end of the building and the east parking lot are not good drop off zones. With the construction on I-215, the bus has been getting to school at irregular times and we need to have the zone clear so it can pull in and drop off students. Using the east parking lot as a drop off blocks the faculty parking stalls and puts students at risk because many of them walk through that lot as they come to campus from the neighborhoods.
We started Charger Time this week. The format for Charger Time is vastly different that it has been the last couple of years. This year, we will only have Charger Time once a week for 30 minutes. It will be held on Wednesday, and it’s main focus will be on intervention and extension for classes. Teachers will call students to their classes to they can work with them in small groups. This will also be a time when students can be called to a class to make up a missed quiz, test, or project. Students will be required to attend the class they get called to as teachers will be taking roll based on who they asked to have come to their class. Students who are not called to a specific teacher’s classroom can go to the cafeteria to read or work on homework quietly, to the library to play board games, or outside/gym to release energy.
We will be doing a clothing drive next week. We are looking for any gently used clothing from infant sizes all the way through adult sizes. All the clothes we gather will be delivered directly to another school in our district to be distributed to their families in need. We will be collecting clothes in students’ first periods classes for next week only Monday-Friday. This is a great opportunity to donate items to a drive where we know exactly where the items are going and who they are helping.
Calendars on the Website:
Our school calendars on the website are currently not working. The problem has something to do with the company the district uses to support the websites. I checked them this morning and it looks like they are kind-of operational. Until they are fully up and running, though, there are links on the page that will take you to a different format of the calendar that will have the items available to be viewed. I will also be using Facebook to try to keep everyone up to date on the happenings at school.
If your student forgets something they need for school and you need to bring it to them, please bring it to the office and drop it off. We can put your student’s name on the item and call them down between classes to get it. Following this process keeps unnecessary traffic out of the halls that can be distracting to classes. It is also a security issue for the school to have people in the building and in halls when we are unaware of it.
Fee Waiver and Free/Reduced Lunch:
If you need to apply for fee waiver, please remember that the deadline for doing so is 30 days after the first day school. The due date for application this year will be September 28. Fee waiver applications need to be turned in to an administrator in the main office. Please follow the directions on the application, and if you have questions please contact the office. Each student needs to have a separate application filled out for fee waiver.
Applications for Free/Reduced lunch are in the main office. They can be filled out and turned in to the cafeteria. Each family only needs to fill out one application. When a family is approved, all of their kids at any level of school will be covered.
