I grew up in Kearns, graduating from Kearns High School. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and ESL and a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Utah. I taught Spanish and ESL for five years in Tooele School District before receiving my administrative license from Utah State University. I’ve been an administrator in Granite School District for the last five years and have loved it. I am married and have four daughters, ranging from 12 to four years old. Obviously, they take all my free time and I love it! I love to read, especially fantasy. I also love to spend time outside, four-wheeling, camping, and sports (e.g. basketball and volleyball). I’m so excited to come and be a part of Truman! I look forward to getting to know and working with all of you. I love coming to work and being with so many students, parents, and staff members, all working together to make a difference in the life of each child. It’s inspiring!

I have three great loves in my life. My family, my job, and Utah football! I have worked in Special Education since 1991. After 17 years the fabulous Ana Hafford talked me into getting my college degree. I graduated from Utah State in 2013, it was one of the best things I have ever done. I love my job; my students make me smile every day. My family is an amazing support for me and they are the coolest people to hang out with. Most of all I love working at Truman; we have an amazing team here!

I love kids! I have been a school psychologist for Granite School District for over 15 years working with children with various neurological and cognitive disorders, as well as emotional and behavioral issues. I enjoy working with teachers, parents, and administrators to resolve problems, big and small. It is very rewarding to watch children change and grow and to be an integral part of that process.
When I’m not spending my time with the students here at Granite School District, you can find me hiking, reading books, or playing the X-box with my own three kiddos or snuggled in the papasan with the latest copy of the New Yorker.

For as long as I can remember the answer to “what do you want to be when you grow up?” was always “I want to be a teacher”. Now that I have reached that goal my answer is I want to be remembered. I want to be remembered by my students as someone who encouraged them to go after their goals and their cheerleader after they reached their goal. I want to be remembered by the parents of my students as their partner in crime when it comes to their student’s education. I want to be one of the teachers who goes into the hall of fame of my students’ minds.

I love to teach Kindergarten! I love the unique perspective that 5 and 6 year olds have on life and how eager they are to learn and grow. I love science and how children love to learn about the world around them. I continue to learn and develop my own talents each year as I teach these little ones. I am eager to incorporate new ideas and technologies. I hope you and your child will enjoy this year of school as we let our minds “bloom” together. When I am not teaching or planning for Kindergarten I like to read a good book, work in my garden, attend Zumba classes, and spend time with my family which consists of my husband, three daughters, two dogs, and lots of extended family. School is one of my favorite places to be and I’m very proud to be an educator. This is my 15th year in teaching and my 4th year here at Truman. I taught 2nd grade for the majority of my career but I’ve also worked as a K-5 English Language Learner Specialist, 2nd Grade Science Specialist, K-3 Reading Interventionist, and for the last four years, I’ve worked as a School Literacy Coach. Every year is both challenging and exciting. As Truman’s School Literacy Coach, I work with teachers and students to improve literacy teaching practices and literacy skills. Literacy skills refer to reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I love being able to work with teachers and students with all things literacy! As for me, I grew up in Las Vegas but moved to Oregon shortly after graduating from high school. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood/Elementary Education from Pacific University and a Master of Science degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Portland State University. I enjoy learning new things and finding ways to help all kids be successful. I have a wonderful husband named Kearby and three great kids – Kylie, Levi, and Mackenzie, and the coolest cat in the world – Hal. My family and I love being outside and stay busy by biking, hiking, camping, snowboarding, and surfing (when we can get to the beach). We are always cheering on our beloved Oregon Ducks and since moving to Utah, we’ve added the Utes to our list of favorite teams. We love living in Salt Lake City and I’m so glad to be at Truman Elementary! Stacie Shields
