Dear Beehive Community,
These past few weeks have been both challenging and rewarding. Our secretary, Virginia Glaittli, has been out due to surgery (though she is back with us again on February 25th). We hired a new custodian, Jeff Reeve, replacing Albert Zwahlen who got promoted to Kearns High. The miserable weather has made our school grounds an icy mess. Illness has been rampant—among both students and employees. At the same time, there has been much to celebrate. We held our first ever honor roll assembly where over 200 students were recognized for high achievement based on report card grades. McDonald’s donated 500 cookies to help students and families celebrate this success. Since starting the honor roll at Beehive we have seen an increase in the number of students working harder so they can be on the honor roll next time.
Our high school student partners, Latinos in Action, continue to come faithfully on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays to work with assigned teachers to motivate students to keep doing their best to be successful in school. After all, our goal is to get every student on track to graduate from high school, and the regular visits our Kearns High students contributes to this important message.
We also just started an after school homework help program with our Latinos in Action partners called “Finish Up Friday”. This tutoring program takes place every time there is a short day at Beehive. From 1:00—2:00 students may come to the library to work one-on-one with a tutor to complete assignments and get extra tutoring. But parents and teachers must collaboratively give permission for students to attend through a written permission note. Please see your child’s teacher or pick up a permission note in the office for more details.
I continue to be reminded about how important each individual is to the functioning of our school. Things always go smoother when everyone is here and working together. Thank you for helping your children both arrive at school on time and come prepared to learn. Please know that you can always reach me by phone, in person, or email. I am happy to attend to your questions, concerns, and suggestions to continue to improve our school.
