A parent guide to events and programs at Howard R. Driggs\nElementary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Year-long Programs<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Library: <\/strong>All grades visit the library weekly to find new books and read\nwith the librarian. Check-out privileges vary by grade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n PE:<\/strong> All grades have weekly time with a physical education teacher to\nwork on motor skills, improve sportsmanship, and be active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Art:<\/strong> All grades meet twice a month with an art teacher, in addition to\nart projects in regular classes. Our art program is funded by a Beverly Taylor\nSorenson grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gold Medal Mile:<\/strong> Students are encouraged to run laps outside during lunch recess\non Tuesdays and Thursdays. Classes compete as a team for most laps run during\nthe school year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Dragon Dollars: <\/strong>Students can earn \u201cdollars\u201d for respectful behavior. These tickets\nare entered into weekly prize drawings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BUG Lunch:<\/strong> Teachers each recognize one student every week for B<\/strong>eing U<\/strong>nbelievably\nG<\/strong>reat. Winners get a certificate and eat lunch with the principal at the\nend of the week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Spirit Days:<\/strong> These are held on Fridays or the last school day of each week. Show your school spirit by wearing Driggs gear from any year or any of our school colors of red or blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Service Activities: <\/strong>Driggs hosts periodic service activities for the benefit of our\ncommunity. These have included gathering canned food, writing letters to\nmilitary service members, donating toys, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Before and After School Clubs<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Garden Club: <\/strong>For 3-6 grades. Students stay after school once a month to learn about plants and insects. This club is led by Ms. Jueschke and local gardeners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n STEM Club: <\/strong>For 3-6 grades. Students come before or after school once a month to participate in science demonstrations and learn about technology. This club is led by Ms. Ricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Student Ambassadors\/Safety Patrol: <\/strong>For 5th graders. Students assist before and after school in encouraging safe behaviors on campus, and in taking care of the school flag. Safety Patrol members are invited to a field trip at the end of the year. This is organized by Mr. Black.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Grade Level Activities<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Kindergarten:<\/strong> Students spend a day learning about community helpers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 1st Grade<\/strong>: Students learn about plants, insects, and the water cycle.\nWeather permitting, they walk to the Holladay Community Garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2nd Grade: <\/strong>Students learn about other countries and their cultures,\nlanguages, and food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n 3rd Grade: <\/strong>Students learn about Native American cultures.They also celebrate\nthe end of the year with a Harry Potter-themed party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 4th Grade: <\/strong>Students participate in a Mountain Man Rendezvous as they learn\nabout early Utah settlers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 5th Grade:<\/strong> Students learn about the colonial times in the United States. They also spend a day at Junior Achievement Biz-town learning about business and employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Holiday Events<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Halloween Parade:<\/strong> Students can wear costumes to school on Halloween day. Drop your\nchild off and stick around to watch the costume parade. Parents also host\nparties in individual classrooms. All kindergarten classes come in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sing Around the Tree: <\/strong>Each grade performs 2-3 Christmas and winter-themed songs for\ntheir parents. This popular program is held during the school day in the last\nweek of school in December. Come early, as seating and parking are in high\ndemand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Valentine Exchange: <\/strong>Students bring valentine cards to give to each member of their\nclass on Valentine\u2019s Day. Parents host parties in individual classrooms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Other Programs and Events<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Registration: <\/strong>Come to fill out required paperwork or fill it out online through the Granite Portal, this happens online during the summer (end of July\/ beginning of August. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Back to School Night:<\/strong> This is an optional night for families, students and teachers. It is a great way to sign up to volunteer with various committees, and make optional donations. You can take a tour of the school from our principal, here about school rules, expectations and procedures. You might even meet your teacher!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kindergarten Testing:<\/strong> Students entering kindergarten take a state entry exam before the school year starts to assess basic skills. They are then placed into classes. At the end of the year, they repeat the exam. Because of this, kindergarten starts a few days later in the school year and has a few days off mid-May while exit testing occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Student\/Educator\/Parent Conferences: <\/strong>These are held in September\nand February. Sign up online for an appointment to meet with your teacher.\nBring your student to the meeting to review progress and make goals.\nKindergartners have a different school schedule the week of SEPs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Learning Centers: <\/strong>Kindergarten and 1st grade parents can help in the classroom one Friday each month by teaching 15-minute lessons about seasonal topics to small groups in rotation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Reflections: <\/strong>This arts contest is held each fall for all grades. Students can\nenter original work in art, literature, filmmaking, dance, and music. School\nwinners can move on to region, state, and national competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dragon Week: <\/strong>Students learn about the Red Ribbon Week pledge, white ribbon week pledge, diversity and inclusivity. Look for a schedule of activities in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Vision Screening: <\/strong>Driggs hosts annual vision screening for kindergarten, 1st grade,\n3rd grade, and 5th grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maturation Programs: <\/strong>A puberty\/health education program is given to 5th grade, with\nboys and girls taught separately. The curriculum is taught by a representative\nfrom Planned Parenthood, and the students\u2019 parents are invited to attend with\nthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n STEM Fair:<\/strong> An optional science fair is held each year. See the office for\ndetails; projects must be preapproved. School winners from the 5th and 6th\ngrades go on to the district level competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Read Across America:<\/strong> We celebrate reading and writing during the first week of March. Our school will participate in a schoolwide activity to promote a love of reading and writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Junior Achievement: <\/strong>Parents sign up to teach 30-45 minute lessons about money, taxes,\ncommunity services, and employment options. Lessons are prepared for you by\nthis national organization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Field Day: <\/strong>During school in the last week in May, students spend a half-day\nplaying large group games outside. Parents sign up to help organize games and\ntreats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Fundraiser Opportunities<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Back to School Night: <\/strong>Parents can buy PTA memberships or make donations to support school programs during registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fall Fundraiser:<\/strong> This event varies by year and is the primary source of funds for\nour school programs. Driggs parents host the event to maximize profits. Thanks\nfor your incredible support!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Art Night: <\/strong>A spring event sponsors arts opportunities at Driggs. You\u2019ll enjoy food, crafts, a silent raffle, and see the great artwork our students create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Store Rewards:<\/strong> Connect your account at Maceys, Smith\u2019s Marketplace, Fresh\nMarket, or Amazon Smile to direct a portion of your shopping proceeds to our\nschool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Book Fair:<\/strong> Families can buy books from our book fair during SEP conferences.\nA portion of the proceeds comes back to our school library. You can also purchase\nbooks requested by each teacher to sponsor reading in your child\u2019s class. These\n\u201cteacher wish list\u201d books will be presented to each teacher after the fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
