The Community Council members work to improve the school environment and provide feedback on school programs. School Community Council members serve for a term of two years and must have a child attending our school. The time commitment is around an hour a month. Math comprehension is one of our greatest academic needs. We will create math labs, a reading strategies class, and add other extended periods when necessary to lower class sizes and focus on remediation. Our reading strategies class will provide support for students that currently read below standard on the HMH Reading Assessment. Evergreen will host an evening curriculum night mid-year for students and parents. The night will be spent with 5th grade students from our feeder schools. We introduce them to the various programs that we offer and train them how to access core standards. We also introduce them to literacy and\/or numeracy strategies relevant to junior high and introduce them to organizational and other soft skills required in junior high. Teachers are paid a stipend to attend and participate. Teachers will run before and after school tutoring for students who need additional help. This will help with remediation and allow students to retake assessments. We may use Land Trust monies to pay teachers to stay after contract time for tutoring and academic\/curricular clubs. We will dedicate some of our advisory periods to improve school-wide literacy. Teachers will create word walls that has common vocabulary as well as supplemental words that relate to their content areas. Teachers will instruct the students using these vocabulary words. During these reading advisory periods we will focus on school-wide literacy by reading from different scholarly articles. The articles will help improve vocabulary, fluency, and decoding skills. If a conflict of interest provides a direct personal financial benefit or is a violation of the district\u2019s ethical standards, the member must recuse themselves and refrain from the voting process on that specific issue. A simple majority of those present approves\r\nall actions. A quorum (50% of overall council membership plus one) is\r\npresent before official votes are taken. No final action is taken on\r\nsubstantive issues not listed on the agenda. Issues not listed on the\r\nagenda can be discussed, and assignments pertaining to these issues may\r\nbe made, if the assignments are designed to help us make a proper\r\ndecision at a later date. We will follow the Robert\u2019s Rules of Order with six\r\nsteps: Motion: A member raises a hand or speaks to propose an idea (&#8220;I\r\nmove that&#8230;&#8221;). Second: Another member says, &#8220;I second the motion,&#8221;\r\nshowing support to discuss it. Restate Motion: The chairperson repeats\r\nthe motion to the group. Debate: Members discuss the idea and share\r\nviews. Vote: The chair calls for a vote (aye, no, or raised hands).\r\nAnnounce Vote: The chair states if the motion passes or fails.\r\n\r\nThe council conducts its business in an organized and respectful manner that promotes ethical behavior and civil discourse. Speakers must\r\nstate their name and address, direct all comments to the council, and avoid\r\nrepetitive arguments or yielding time to other speakers.
