below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Granite School District \u2013 Attendance Procedures<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of the school\u2019s commitment to quality education, we are concerned when a student misses school for any reason.&nbsp; The mission of the Granite School District is to prepare every student with the knowledge and skills needed for lifelong success in a changing world.&nbsp; Students who are excessively absent from school are not able to accomplish their educational goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Utah Compulsory Attendance Laws (Utah Code 53A-11-101&nbsp;<em>et seq<\/em>.), parents and students are responsible for regular school attendance.&nbsp; Occasionally a student must be absent from school for reasons which are acceptable to the school, such as illness, medical appointments, family emergencies, or the death of a family member or close friend.&nbsp; Please send a note to school following an absence explaining the reason for your child\u2019s absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>District Attendance Procedures are as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A parent may excuse up to seven (7) days of absences within a school year. Subsequent absences are considered excessive and may require a doctor\u2019s note to excuse.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>After five (5) or more days of unexcused absences within a school year, the school will mail the student\/parents a Truancy Letter asking for the parents\u2019 help with their student\u2019s attendance and warning of consequences for further truancy.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>After ten (10) days of unexcused absences within a school year, the school will mail the student and parent a Habitual Truancy Notice. The Habitual Truancy Notice requires the student and parents to appear at a pre-court hearing (students under the age of 14) or a truancy mediation meeting (students age 14 and over).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Students in grades 9-12 are subject to Granite School District\u2019s Citizenship Policy, which states that students with two (2) or more unexcused absences may not receive higher than a \u201c0\u201d in citizenship. Granite District policy requires all students to maintain a 2.0 CPA (Citizenship Point Average) in order to graduate from high school. &nbsp;&nbsp;Excessive absences may jeopardize a student\u2019s ability to graduate from high school and\/or participate in special programs such as athletics or drivers education.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Additionally, Granite District can make a referral to Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) for educational neglect if a student is absent, without good cause, for more than ten (10) consecutive school days or more than 1\/16 of the school period in accordance with Utah Code<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 78A-6-319.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please check with the school attendance specialist or attendance secretary concerning the number of excused or unexcused absences that your student has.
