JA City-Biz Town

March 18, 2015 by

On March 17, 2015, Robert Frost’s 5th grade went to JA City-Biz Town for a day. JA City is a “fully-interactive simulated town facility” that combines with what they’ve learned in the classroom. It is designed to help students “connect the dots” from the classroom to the real world. The overall program consists of the students participating in daily lessons, hands-on activities and active participation in running JA City, which is designed to help students gain an understanding of the relationship between what they learn in school and their participation in a worldwide economy. Students work as employees in various business (that were facilitated by Discover Card), and are given positions within that company. Some of the positions, students had to apply and be interviewed. Students are paid (with JA City money) for their work and manage personal checking accounts. Students are also taught the importance of time and money management skill as they work, bank and shop as consumers. At the end of the day, students are debriefed and discuss their experiences, and further gain an understanding of the correlations between the classroom and the real world.

Huge thank you to our business partner Discover Card, who sponsored our school.
