August and September in Secondary Adapted Physical Education (APE)
Hey, My name is Vanessa Mortensen Stout, or as many students call me PE. This is my 9th year having the opportunity to teach APE to our Secondary students and some Post High students. I have planned a variety of activities that will be centered around 7 different units this year. Each unit will be running from two weeks up to 6 weeks. We will also continue to have mindfulness activities in the little gym on Wednesdays and bike day every Thursday. We will do a preposition obstacle course every other week, and work on various object control skills within each unit.
It is my intention to keep you in the loop through the school website. I will introduce each unit; the skills we will focus on; the key points and key words we use to teach them; and some activities you can do at home to support your child’s growth. As I introduce the next unit, I will review the previous unit.
August is Back to School. Our focus will be on routines – like checking in and out using our names, stopping to listen when the music stops, and staying out of each other’s personal space.
In September we will focus on Soccer. We will mainly work on kicking a ball at a stationary target (a goal, an oversized cone, through a hoop). We will also kick a ball through an obstacle course.
When kicking a ball, my main focus is having your child kick with the instep/inside of their preferred foot – they might come home with a sticker on their shoe to visualize. Second focus would be to have them place their other foot next to the ball right before kicking. If we do a running approach, the last step should be a long step or leap.
At home, you can kick a ball back and forth, pick a target to kick to – it is always more fun when the target gets knocked over when the ball hits it!
Our yoga story on Mindfulness Wednesday will be “The Warrior and the Lion”
