New Boys Basketball Coach
Hunter High welcomes Jason Long as the new Varsity Men’s Basketball Coach; Jason comes to Hunter with multiple years of experience both on the collegiate and High School level. Before coming to Hunter High, Coach Long was the Varsity boys coach and a teacher at Wasatch High for the past 5 years. Long has guided Wasatch to the 4A State Tournament the past two seasons. The Wasps built on that success moving to 5A in 2017-2018 when they qualified for a Region 8 play-in game. In 2015-2016, Long was one of four finalists for 4A Coach of the Year. Coach Long also recently become an Accredited & Certified National Interscholastic Coach – a NFHS Level Two National Certification (AIC).
Jason Long was an assistant coach at Westminster College working in the women’s program for 3 years and men’s program from 2004-2009 and again in 2011-2013. Long brings impressive experience learning from several high-level coaches: Adam Hiatt (Montana Tech), Chris Jones (University of Utah), Todd Phillips (Salt Lake Community College) and Tommy Connor (University of Utah).
Coach Long graduated from Westminster with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and a Minor in Spanish in 2004 and completed his Master’s in the Arts of Teaching from Westminster College graduating in 2011 at the top of his class with a perfect 4.0 GPA. While completing his masters, Coach Long was the Varsity Assistant Coach at Highland High School for two seasons highlighted by a 22-3 season and 4A State Championship with the Rams in 2010-2011. Long then returned to Westminster for two more seasons working under head coach, Adam Hiatt before making the move to Wasatch.
Since 2003, Coach Long has also been heavily involved in several youth AAU programs including developmental as well as elite level teams. Most recently, Long served as head coach for the 16U Utah Basketball Club Elite team that finished the 2013 summer as one of the premier teams in the west. This team included former Hunter High multi-sport star, Noah Togiai. During this time, Long had the privilege of coaching and developing over 50 eventual collegiate-level players. In the summer of 2013, Long’s team achieved a No. 1 National Ranking as they won 3-consecutive tournament championships in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
Coach Long married his wife, Stacy, on May 18, 2013 and adopted their two sons Carter, 12, and Max, 9, on April 22, 2014. Their only daughter, Abigail, 3, was born Dec. 2, 2014.
