Happy New Year! The year is flying by. The second semester begins January 13th marking the midway point of the year. New beginnings such as the beginning of a new year is a great time for evaluating where we are and identifying areas for growth. As a school, we are doing this process. We are looking at midyear data and evaluating where we are in our learning and how we can help our students make the greatest gains in their learning in the second half of the school year. I encourage you to discuss goals for academic growth with your students as well. In these discussions, please include discussion on consistent on time attendance at school and 20 minutes a day of reading time to improve reading abilities. Attendance and reading skills are paramount to student growth.
In the coming weeks we will be recognizing students for their grades and on January 14th we will be handing out our grade level student awards for second quarter. Invitations will be out soon. Our students do many great things and we look forward to recognizing them for their efforts.
Our Community Council continues to investigate and discuss school reconfiguration within our network and the possibility of adding 6th grade students to Kearns Junior High School in the fall of 2021. In the coming, few months a survey will be conducted and you may be contacted as part of this survey. Your insights are critical to the discussion about reconfiguration. We are considering reconfiguration for the following reasons: First, research suggests academic benefits to serving 6th grade students in a middle school. Second, increased enrollment that adding the 6th grade would bring will allow us to enrich the elective classes and programs we are able to offer to our students especially in elective subjects.
As we focus on the second half of the school year and the important work that lies ahead, we maintain a major focus on cultivating a Growth Mindset. We embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and emphasize effort made by students and growth at every level. Our students are preparing their portfolios to share at Student-Led Conferences February 12th and 13th.
We look forward to a strong second half of the year. Thank you for the opportunity of working with your fabulous students.
