Dear Kearns Jr. High Families,
A lot has happened in our world since the last day we all attended school traditionally in person on March 13th. Most notably our continued efforts to navigate through the COVID-19 Pandemic. This continues to be extraordinary times for which none of us have experienced before. We commend our students, families, teachers, and staff for their efforts in adapting to distance learning last spring. We were very impressed with the efforts made to ensure that learning continued for all our students.
We are pleased to announce that school is scheduled to begin on August 24th with 7th grade students attending their orientation day on August 2151• We have sincerely missed seeing our students and teachers in our classrooms and hallways. We also recognize that for many of our families the beginning of this school year comes with questions about sending their students to school. These questions are questions and concerns that we may not have ever imagined we would be faced with. It is with that in mind that we are working very hard in coordination with Granite School District officials, and state and local education and health experts in our preparations for the coming school year. It is our top priority to ensure the safety of our students, teachers, staff, and our patrons. There are new guidelines and ideas for improved safety in schools regularly and we strive to be proactive and flexible to provide the safest learning environment possible for each individual student.
One important consideration is the wide variety of Individual circumstances that exist in our Kearns Junior High Community. These varied circumstances impact the decisions weighing on family’s minds regarding plans for returning to school.
It is essential that students have access to education and can return to school. However, what returning to school looks like can look differently for individual students. As part of our planning we have developed a plan that is flexible to the everchanging situation with COVID-19 and gives families options for education. Families have the choice to have their students attend school in person or online.
Both options are available for families to consider for their child’s education this fall. Below, we would like to give more details about: 1- The precautions we are taking at KJH for a safe return to school. 2- The online learning option for families that wish to keep their students learning at home. 3- Important dates for the start of the school year.
First, our plan for reopening: While we will be re-opening for school it will not be normal. Students will notice significant steps to ensure safety and health of everyone. Everyone will need to follow the KJH “High Five” Wearing a Mask, Social Distancing, Washing Hands Frequently (for 20 seconds), Following the hallway flow of traffic, and sitting in assigned seating areas). Students will not have lockers assigned to them, hallway floors will be marked to direct traffic to minimize close interaction, classrooms will be arranged to distance students as much as possible, sanitization stations will be available throughout the school. These are some of the plans in place. There is a complete reopening plan with details for every school space that is available on our website.
Second, families that prefer their students learn online can access the same curriculum from their amazing KJH teachers they would get in class, but on a digital platform via CANVAS. As the year progresses, families will have the ability to switch seamlessly from digital to in person schooling. Parents will still need to register their students for school and as part of the registration they can submit the “Distance Learning Request Form”. You can also turn in the request form (included in this letter). To
have your student return to in person schooling, you will contact School Administration or your child’s School Counselor. Students will be expected to learn online everyday on this format. If you have any question about this option, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Third, Important dates to be aware of:
Registration is online: Registration will open on Monday, August 3rd . In accordance with CDC and State Health Department guidelines, all registration will be done online. All necessary forms (including fee waiver and Distance Learning Request) are online. If you need assistance registering online, or have limitations with computer access, please call us at 385-646-5204 we will be available to help navigate the online registration and set up individual, in-person appointments as needed.
7th Grade Orientation: 7th grade orientation will be held on Friday, August 21st from 8:30 to Noon. Students will have the opportunity to attend their classes and meet their teachers. Unfortunately, busing will not be available for students on that day. This is the first day of school for 7th grade students.
First Day of School: The first full day of school for all students is on Monday, August 24th• School starts at 7:50, with the doors opening at 7:40. Breakfast will be served at 7:20. School gets out at 2:45.
From pandemics, to earthquakes, 2020 has been a year of unprecedented challenges in Kearns. We are certain that there will continue to be adjustments and improvements as we continue to navigate these uncharted waters. We will keep you informed as they occur. Please check our website regularly and join us on Facebook. We are confident that together, we will thrive this year as we overcome these challenges, grow, and succeed.
