Mrs. Sheryl Burton is a very special volunteer at Magna Elementary. She is a sweet woman who donates her time to read to children ranging from ages Kindergarten to 2nd grade for about 15 years now.
The students and teachers get excited when they see Mrs. Burton walking into the school, her red bag in hand. What story is she going to share with them that day? What character is she going to be? What fun voice will they get to hear from her as they dive into their imagination and love of books? This love of reading grows, due to Mrs. Burton.
A mother shared an experience she had about her children and Mrs. Burton: “My daughter saw her in a store once and got really excited and said, ‘Mom, Look! That is the lady I have told you that comes to read to us!’ She will tell me on days that she was there and tell me how much she loves those days. My son has also told me how nice she is. My favorite experience was when one of the said, ‘Mom, did you know she doesn’t get paid to come and read to all of us? She just does it for free — so she must really love kids.'”
While having a student read to me, that child was stopped by Mrs. Burton. I admired her as she took the time to congratulate that student on how well they read, that they were improving, and that she is proud of them. Those simple words build students’ confidence in their schoolwork and in themselves. Another mother shares, “My 15-year-old saw Mrs. Burton at the store and was so happy to see her. First grade was so long ago, but he remembers her love for him. I am happy to see her and I have seen the first grader’s faces light up when they see her.” They are so well behaved when she comes. Mrs. Burton loves reading and openly shares the importance that children should read every day. She is quick to get the books to the school on her next trip when the children request their favorite books.
We are so lucky to have Mrs. Burton at our school and we think every school and child should have such an amazing example of how to truly love reading.
