Millcreek PTA’s IditaRead Rad-a-Thon Under Way

March 3, 2023Amber ClaytonUncategorized

The Millcreek PTA is hosting our second annual Read-A-Thon fundraiser.  While this year’s event is not a fundraiser, we still want to encourage reading & challenge our students to read over 120,000 minutes during two weeks from Friday, March 3rd to Thursday, March 16th!

4 Things You Need to Know

  1. Encourage your student to read!
  • This is the most important thing for you to do!
  • Every student will receive 3 free books at the beginning of the IditaRead!
  1. Log At-Home Reading Minutes
  • Whether you read a book to your child or they read on their own, log those minutes online!
  • The link to log at-home reading minutes will be shared on Class Dojo.
  • We are challenging each student to read:
  • Preschool – 2nd Grade Students:  At least 400 minutes
  • 3rd – 5th Grade Students:  At least 600 minutes
  • Minutes read at school will be logged by the teacher.
  1. Fun School Events
  • Fri Mar 2nd:  Opening Ceremonies – Opening parade and outdoor assembly with sled dogs!
  • Mon Mar 6th:  Scales & Tails Assemblies – Students get to see and learn about interesting animals!
  • Fri Mar 10th:  Stuffed Animal Reading Party – Students bring a stuffed animal & get extra reading time!
  1. Amazing Prizes
  • Every class that meets their reading goal gets extra recess!
  • Top classes get free Chick-fil-A lunch at school!
  • Every student that reads 1,049 minutes (the length of the Iditarod race) gets a special certificate and party with Principal Clayton!
  1. Deadline to Log Reading Minutes:  5pm on Thursday March 16th!

Mighty Millcreek Calendars

February 28, 2023Amber ClaytonUncategorized

We are happy to share our calendars for March-May. Copies will be sent home with students tomorrow. Please be aware that the March calendar is pretty firm. The April and May calendars say “planning ahead” at the top. This is to indicate that they are still a work in progress, but we want to share the information we have with you so that you can “plan ahead”!

Registering for Preschool 2023-2024

January 27, 2023Amber ClaytonUncategorized

We learned this week that our traditional PreK will move to Lincoln, and our Special Ed PreK will move to Wilson next school year. (Penn Elementary does not offer PreK.)
This is a great time to begin registering for preschool. Registration is online with GSD’s Preschool Department.
Remember, if you are requesting to attend a PreK class outside of your boundaries, you will also need to apply for open enrollment to that school. Learn more about Open Enrollment.

Principal Clayton’s Message on School Closure

December 8, 2022Amber ClaytonUncategorized

On Tuesday, December 6, 2022, our School Board voted to accept the PAC Committee’s recommendation to close Twin Peaks Elementary, Spring Lane Elementary, and our Millcreek Elementary.

It has been such an honor to serve as the principal of Millcreek for the past 18 months. I am so proud of our community, and what we have accomplished together. We have demonstrated the power of parent and community engagement to enrich the experience of school for our children and to give voice to the heart of the community.

Our journey is not over. In fact, the importance of our collaborative efforts has just increased exponentially. Rather than fade away, our students and families need us to rally. Together we will create the conditions for a smooth transition to our new schools.

Over the past couple of weeks, we reached out to our Dual Immersion families. We received Letters of Intent for 117 of 127 to continue participation in DLI next year at Penn Elementary.

Tomorrow I will be sending out a survey to the families of student in our traditional classes. The goal will be to ensure each and every family is aware and of their new boundary school and their open enrollment options. (See the map at https://drive.google.com/file/d/19BuygAYqHPo_NSHqvcGxQwNBIh5mQMCy/view)

We will then embark on a series of transition events. We hope you will join us for our PTA Family Movie Night on Monday, December 19. This will be our first opportunity for families to meet Principal Christie Christensen from Wilson Elementary, Principal Milton Collins from Lincoln Elementary, and Principal Nichole Higgins from William Penn Elementary. The event starts at 5:30, and these folks will join us for the first half hour so that our families can meet them and hear about these receiving schools.

I will be sharing more information about the transition along the way, but please feel free to reach out to me at asclayton@graniteschools.org with any questions.

Again, it is such a great joy to serve Millcreek. While this is a sad moment, I know that together we will forge a path to ensure future success for our students, families, and staff. We will always be proud to say that we were the last class at Millcreek. Go Mustangs!
