As an introduction to STEM activities, Oakwood’s teachers were divided into two teams – racing each other to “Breakout” of a box secured with four different locks. One lock was directional, another was a letter lock, and two were number locks. The objective was to open the box by searching for clues, then decipher the codes, and use technology to help solve the puzzles. Both teams were able to crack the codes and were successful at “Breaking Out.” This was a great activity that promoted collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and complex problem solving. Teachers were encouraged to adapt the activity in their classrooms.
