{"id":27511,"date":"2026-08-18T12:34:21","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T18:34:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schools.graniteschools.org\/olympushigh\/?page_id=27511"},"modified":"2026-09-08T13:18:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T19:18:11","slug":"federal-aid","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/schools.graniteschools.org\/olympushigh\/counseling-center\/college-career-access\/federal-aid\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal Aid"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FAFSA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>FAFSA<\/strong>\u00a0is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/fsa-id\/sign-in\">Free\u00a0Application for\u00a0Federal\u00a0Student\u00a0Aid<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is a form you fill out with the federal government that&nbsp;takes your family\u2019s financial information and determines what kind of financial aid you qualify for.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must fill out the FAFSA&nbsp;<strong>every year<\/strong>&nbsp;that you are in school. You will always fill out the FAFSA one year in advance (ex. you will fill it out your senior year of high school for your freshman year of college).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Even if you don\u2019t think you\u2019ll qualify for aid, still apply! Some scholarships require FAFSA completion (like the <a href=\"https:\/\/ushe.edu\/state-scholarships-aid\/opportunity-scholarship\/\">USHE Opportunity Scholarship<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Get started by checking out this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sB5s8cY2ghE&amp;list=PLtr3wy4M_CJ1dh4_EU1dkacmXyilGn-8m\">step-by-step FAFSA guide (PDF)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Items Needed To Complete The FAFSA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Contributor\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is a parent \u2013 if your legal guardian is someone other than a parent, see if you are considered an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\/filling-out\/dependency\">independent student<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your parents are divorced, whoever provides you more financial support OR whoever has a higher income\/assets will be the sole contributor. If they are both about even, either parent can be your contributor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your parents file taxes separately, BOTH parents will need to be contributors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you aren\u2019t sure who should be added to your FAFSA, use this tool:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/fafsa-apply\/parents\">FAFSA Parent Tool<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you don\u2019t have a contributor or legal guardian, see if you qualify as an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\/filling-out\/dependency\">independent student<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Personal Email\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The student and contributor need unique personal emails that they can access. Do NOT use your Granite email.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Federal Tax Return\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The FAFSA uses tax information from\u00a0two years prior\u00a0to the academic year for which you are applying (e.g. the 2026\u201327 FAFSA uses 2024 tax information).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the tax return year drastically misrepresents your current financial situation, contact the colleges of interest and they can make an appeal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Record of Your Assets\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The FAFSA requires reporting the net worth of cash, savings, checking, investments, and real estate (excluding the primary home) as of the date of filing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Key reportable assets include stocks, bonds, 529 plans, rental property, and business value.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you have a business with less than 100 employees, you do NOT need to report<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not include primary home equity, qualified retirement accounts (401k, IRA), or life insurance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Government Identification\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students that do not have Social Security Numbers are unable to file FAFSA unless they meet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/eligibility\/requirements\/non-us-citizens\">eligible non-citizen requirements<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contributors who don\u2019t have Social Security Numbers can still submit the FAFSA using these\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1lp-kqlDXa8VShBZ7c7Fqyv4ztjAev56z\/view?usp=drive_link\">step-by-step instructions (PDF)<\/a>. A quick identity validation process will also be required after submission to finalize the application.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How To Start The FAFSA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The students will start the FAFSA form every time. To start, students will simply login using their FSA ID information and start a new form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the student has completed their section, they will then invite their contributor.
