School Dismissal Updates
March 16, 2020
Olympus Jr. High will still be providing lunch during the school dismissal. Grab and Go lunches will be available at the school from 11:30am-1:00pm. Students can come to the school during this time, head to the cafeteria to grab food, and then exit the building. We will not be providing seating areas for students to sit and eat lunch. Also, students can go to any school to get lunch; meaning, if your junior high student has elementary siblings, they can all go together to the same school to get lunch whether that be the junior high or the elementary school. Or, if you live closer to the high school, they can go there.
Retrieving Materials from School:
We understand your student may have something here at school they may need during the school dismissal. We have asked teachers to put materials on line that won’t require students to have anything but an electronic device and the internet, but, if, for example, your student has a musical instrument in the band room they need, they can come pick it up. We simply ask that they not linger in the building. Run in, grab what they need, and head out.
Teachers met this morning and will be working throughout today and tomorrow to get learning materials posted on-line. Most teachers will be posting to Canvas. We have asked them to post 20-30 minutes worth of work for each of the days students are dismissed. Those days exclude today and tomorrow and the regularly scheduled Spring Break. If a teacher has already been using Google Classrooms instead of Canvas, they will post their materials there. Students would already be aware of which teachers are using Google. Everyone else will be using Canvas.
In addition to the work teachers will be posting on-line, we strongly encourage all students to read for 30 minutes a day and to be active for 60 minutes a day.
Finishing 3rd Quarter:
Third Quarter ends Wednesday. We know some teachers were still planning on accepting assessment redos and other work from students this week. To accommodate this we have set-up the following process:
- In the commons area just outside the Counseling Center we have tables set-up with a basket for each teacher. Students can come in and put any work they need to turn in into the appropriate basket. For Ms. Thomas, please place work into the appropriate folder, by class period, in the basket. We anticipate a lot of work coming in for her as she was gone the last two weeks for her surgery.
- Some students may need to redo assessments prior to Wednesday. I have asked teachers to reach out to their respective classes via an email either from Canvas or Gradebook to let students know if redos are available. We will have a testing space available in the commons area as we don’t want students congregating in classrooms. Students can, as needed, come in to take an assessment and we will place them in the commons to take it and then collect it and get it back to the appropriate teacher.
- Any work, assessment, or redo needs to be turned in/taken by Tuesday, March 17th.
If your student needs an electronic device so they can access the on-line learning, they can come to the school and check-out a Chromebook. A parent needs to come in with the student because we do have a form that needs to be filled out. Please come to the main office and see Ms. Bearss and she will help you through this process. Chromebooks will be available after 1pm today, Monday, as we need time to charge them and add a district internet filter that was just sent to us.
These are the basics for now. If anything else comes up I will pass it along. Please remember that I’ll be using Facebook to provide the quickest updates, so check out our page.
