Principal’s Message
December 12, 2022
Walking Safety:
We have had a couple of parents let us know in the last few weeks that their student has been followed by a car as they walk home from school. It’s always a good time to have conversations with your students about safety and keeping themselves safe. This is a needed conversation for all students who walk to and from school. We have many more students walking home from school than we do who walk to school, so please talk with them about being aware of their surroundings, walking with friends in a group, and what to do should they notice anything odd or off.
Communication Home:
Some parents did not receive notification from the school or district the morning of the delayed start. If we are in for a storm, please know that if there will be any changes to the schedule, that information will be communicated from the district via email and the various news outlets. The district will also send out a text. I will also send out a text from the school and post the changes to Facebook. If you have blocked the district’s text number, please know that that also blocks the school’s text number as our texts come from the same server as the district’s. If you didn’t receive any of the communication that morning, you can check your information (phone number, email address) in parent portal or by calling the Counseling Center.
Mid-Term and End of Quarter:
Mid-term was last week, so teachers posted current grades for all students. Second quarter is always a little hard to make sure everyone is keeping up on things because of the breaks. The quarter will end on January 11, so there isn’t much time when we come back from break for students to catch up and wrap things up for the quarter. As always, if you have questions about your student’s grade please email the teacher for help/feedback.
Change for Kids:
The SBOs have been spearheading a fundraiser donation drive to collect money to support two local charities. Money is being collected in students’ Advisory classes. The collected money will be donated to KSL’s Change for Children and to the Granite Education Foundation to support the food bank.
To help incentivize donations, we are providing rewards to all Advisory classes that collect at least $150, and the top two Advisory classes will receive a pizza party for their efforts. Please help remind you student to donate. We will be collecting money this week (Monday-Thursday) and next Monday, December 19.
Open Enrollment:
Open Enrollment will be handled differently this year; the process will be completed on-line. We have put a link on our school website (look for the “Open Enrollment” tab on the top of the page) that will take you to the correct page on the district’s website to complete the Open Enrollment application.
Open Enrollment is currently open and will remain open until February 3. We have had grade levels and programs fill and close the last couple of years, so it is imperative that the application be turned in sooner rather than later.
We will be having our Open House for incoming 5th graders on the evening of January 5 from 6-8pm, and we will be visiting the elementary schools the following week to talk about Olympus Jr. and give out course selection cards.
Art Club:
Mr. Whiting is starting an after school Art Club for any students interested in exploring art more thoroughly than what they can during the school day. Art Club will meet in Mr. Whiting’s room from 3-4pm on Mondays.
Debate:
Mrs. Shuman advises our Debate Club/Team. The team does meet as an after school club and does participate in debate tournaments. She will be holding an informational meeting tomorrow, December 13, after school in her classroom. Debate is open to all students from all grades. It is a great activity to get involved in and will help students develop speaking, researching, writing, and academic argument skills that will help students in all their classes.
Musical Tryouts:
This year, the Drama Department will be putting on “Willie Wonka” as the school musical. Auditions are this week. Students interested in auditioning will need to go see Mr. Totland and sign up, receive their music, and prepare to perform for the director and other judges this week. Tryouts and casting decisions will all take place prior to Winter Break, so don’t miss out if you want to be involved!
Sports Updates:
Both basketball teams are currently undefeated. They have games this week and the championship games will be next week. Good luck to the boys and girls as they look to earn their way into the championships.
Volleyball and wrestling will get started after we come back from winter break. As a reminder both volleyball and wrestling are co-ed, so any boys or girls interested can come participate.
Lost and Found:
The lost and found is growing. A lot of jackets and hoodies are getting left laying around when students get too warm and take them off. We would love to get these items back to their owners, but often they go unclaimed and eventually get donated. You can help us get things back to your students by making sure that jackets and coats have names in them, and water bottles have names on them. Lunchboxes should also have names in them. We do check all items for names when they wind up in the lost and found.
I understand that it’s harder to label hoodies, so if you know your student has a hoodie and you haven’t seen it in a while, please have them check the lost and found.
Lost and found will be cleaned and donated at the end of the quarter, so please have your student check it and claim any of their items by January 11, 2023.
Yearbooks:
Remember to pre-order yearbooks now. We will only order yearbooks for those who preorder, so if you want one, you need to get it now. Pre-order sales will be open until January 11. Remember that yearbooks are not automatically charged to student accounts, and they are not part of the general registration fee that is paid at the beginning of the school year.
