Read. Graduate. Succeed
The STAR reading program was developed by the Utah State Board of Education. During STAR time, students practice one-on-one with a trained volunteer. Using simple, effective practice strategies, these students quickly become stellar readers!
The program is fueled by neighborhood volunteers, who come to the school once or twice per week. The Latinos In Action from Kearns Jr. High tutor regularly and have become fantastic mentors and role models for the students. We appreciate all the volunteers who come from our community to help Cubs read.
If you have any amount of time you could offer, we would be so happy to have you in the STAR program. All training is provided. Contact Sarah Hale, STAR Coordinator, at email@example.com or visit us here to volunteer.
Before School Tutoring Lab
Students are welcome to join us in either of our computer labs before school from 8:00 AM – 8:40 AM to receive additional supports in math and reading. Students may practice their math fluency using our Reflex Math program, reading skills using the Success Maker program or language skills with our Imagine Learning program. This is open to any student.
CUB Attendance Program
Attendance matters! Students who are having a difficult time getting to school, or arriving on time are invited to join the CUB Attendance Program. The earn incentives each Monday for checking in and out each day and are mentored throughout the week during lunch and recess to encourage attendance. Students are considered chronically absent 10% or more of total school days. (That’s about 2 days per month!) Please help us by making sure you student gets to school on time and ready to learn.
Mentoring for Success
Students who are identified as needed additional opportunities to practice their math concepts are given the opportunity to receive one-on-one math mentoring from trained volunteers from the community. This is done during intervention times twice a week. Students play fun interactive math games while gaining valuable math practice.
Extended Day Tutoring
Oquirrh Hills received a grant provided by the 21st Century Community Learning center to allow our teachers to provide afterschool tutoring to students in need of additional math and language arts support. Students are given the opportunity to practice concepts in new ways to better grasp their understanding of the materials. The extended day tutoring program also partners with the Boys & Girls Club to provide a free meal afterschool and the opportunity for students to join the Boys & Girls Club program. Transportation is available for students participating in either of these programs.
