Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we prepare for the upcoming school year, I often receive questions about how student class placements are determined. I’d like to share more about this process to help you understand the thoughtful and intentional work that goes into placing each student in the best possible learning environment.
Around this time each year, current teachers meet with teachers from the next grade level to discuss each student’s academic progress and the type of social-emotional learning environment that would best support them. In addition, specialized teachers, instructional coaches, social workers and administrators work to ensure gender balance in classrooms and appropriate staffing to support students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), multilingual learners, and others who may require accommodations.
Please know that this is a careful and collaborative process involving multiple educators. This process takes countless hours to create an equitable balance, and once the class lists are created it is very difficult to make changes without offsetting that balance.
As a parent or guardian of a William Penn student, your input is welcome. If there are specific factors you believe would support your child’s success, please email me by Monday, May 26th. While we cannot guarantee specific teacher placements, we will take your considerations into account.
Class placements will be posted in the Granite School District Parent Portal after Registration in July (date TBD). You can also contact the office after registration. Please note that placements are subject to change if new students enroll over the summer.
We look forward to an exciting and successful school year ahead!
Sincerely,
Brett Bawden, principal
