Mrs. Perez and Ms. Gifford devised a learning project for their classes that incorporated various objectives to make learning fun. Their description of the project is as follows:
“There are a few reasons [we] did it. First, because the Olympics are a big part of our country so we have been talking about them. Second, [we] wanted them to work together in teams to accomplish certain tasks. Third, it was an academic review that [we] tied into games.
Our first game was a math worksheet of addition, subtraction, place value and ten more, ten less of a number. They had to work together to solve the problems. The second event dealt with sight words. [We] called up a team member from each team and the first one to read the sight word got the points, then they had a chance to get bonus points by throwing a ball into the garbage can. [We] rotated so everyone got a chance. The last event was a relay race to help with physical/[fine] motor skills.
So ,basically [we] tied in [an] academic review, team work and [an] important event from our country. The kids all did a great job, had a great attitude and really did an amazing job to work together as teams to accomplish these tasks.”
