Dear Parents and Patrons:
As this school year opens, I hope you all had a great summer and that you are ready to come back for more learning. We are excited to be back and ready to teach. I would also like to make you aware of the following:
This is our third year of being a Leader in Me school. We will focus on academic achievement along with the seven habits. If you are unfamiliar with the Leader in Me Program, please visit our school website (plymouthelementary.org) to read more about it.
The theme for this year is “Shooting for the Stars.” We are hoping to move test scores and student progress as much as possible. We need your help with this in ensuring that students read at least 20 minutes every evening and that students practice basic skills like memorizing their times tables and other Math facts.
We are in desperate need of two parents to be on the Community Council. The Community Council approves the expenditures through the Land Trust monies given to us by the State. The meetings are once a month in my office at 8:00 a.m. for about 10 – 15 minutes. A minimal commitment. If you feel you could give that much time to the council, please email me and let me know. (firstname.lastname@example.org) It is important that we get these positions filled as soon as possible.
Our funding was cut this year by over $100,000.00. This means that we had to let some of our paraprofessionals go. We may have to make further cuts in the future. The Title I fund for the state was cut by two and a half million dollars. Therefore, all of the Title I schools were adversely affected. We will do our best to continue services for each student but please be aware that we do not have extra funds to spend.
We have three new teachers this year and a new school psychologist. Our new teachers are Mrs. Kunz, Ms. Johnson and Mrs. McOmie. Mrs. Kunz and Ms. Johnson come to us from the University of Utah and teach 3rd Grade. Mrs. McOmie joins us from Idaho and teaches 4th Grade. Our new school psychologist, Joshua Dunn, comes to us from Canyons School District and is an excellent addition to our staff. We welcome our new staff members and wish them the best for a smooth and productive school year.
We will not have an after school program this year because of funding problems. YMCA still offers after school choice – just at their campus by Freemont Elementary. We will have after school tutoring on Mondays and Tuesdays for students who are way behind and who are referred by their teacher to the program. This program will begin in September or October as soon as we can find a teacher to run it.
Again, I hope this year brings your student(s) success. We love our students and look forward to a great year here at Plymouth Elementary.
Matthew Graham, Principal
