Temperature Rule:
Students can come into the gym in the morning @ 8:40 AM and are kept inside from recess when the wind chill (feels like) temperature is 20 degress or below.

Air Quality Rule:
AQI over 150 (PM2.5 above 55.5): all students are kept inside. AQI between 100 and 150 (PM2.5 between 35.4 and 55.5 ): students with documented asthma or chronic lung issues are kept inside. PM2.5 Below 35.4 and AQI below 100 – All students stay outdoors. We use air.utah.gov to verify.

Building Use:
School hours for students are 9:05 AM to 3:40 PM. Students are encouraged to be at school. Students should not arrive earlier than 8:40 AM. Students are allowed into the gym on the mornings of inclement weather.

Inside Morning (School Drop-Off):
Students will come inside in the morning beginning at 8:40 AM if the temperature is between 20 degrees or below. Students should enter through the north side door that will be held open for them. They will go and sit in the gym until the bell rings. A green flag indicates inside day which is hanging near the south and north drop off. Students will be dismissed from the gym one class at a time and will maintain hallway expectations on their way to the classroom.

Recess:
All students are expected to go outside on good weather and good air days at recess times. Students will be kept inside for recess when the wind chill feels like 20 degrees or below, or there is rain/snow falling consistently.

Be Prepared:
The average temperature in Salt Lake County during the winter months is 40 degrees. Creating and engaging in winter play activities, even in the cold months, is fun for students and promotes better health by increasing exercise by using different muscles, getting fresh air and getting the essential vitamin D exposure, just to name a few. For your child to have a great time in the cold weather, the most important
thing to consider is appropriate clothing.

Cold Weather Clothing Suggestions:
• Mittens or Gloves
• Hats
• Scarfs
• Snowpants
• Warm socks
• Boots
• Long sleeve shirts
• Long pants

Due to a change in district policy, “personal electronic devices, including cell phones and smartwatches, will not be permitted during the school day.” There is a phone in the classrooms and the office for student use in case of emergencies or when teacher permission is given. Students with electronic devices will be referred to the front office so that we are able to hold the device safely until a parent is able to retrieve it. If a student brings these items to school, they must be put away for the duration of the school day and be out of sight and unheard. The following rules apply:

The phone/smartwatch must be turned off and put away during the school day: 9:00 a.m. -3:45 p.m. and on buses.

The phone/smartwatch must be kept out of sight and unheard in a pocket or a bag.

In the event a phone or smartwatch is visible (even if it is not being used), students will be referred to the front office.

Students may not make calls from their cell phones/smartwatches during the school day. All emergency phone calls must be made using school phones. Student safety is one of our top priorities, and use of school phones for emergencies gives us the opportunity to become aware of the situation in order to assist and respond as necessary.

Students bring devices at their own risk. We are unable to monitor student devices at school and are unable to accept responsibility for lost, stolen, or damaged electronic devices.

We appreciate everyone’s help in the implementation of this new policy. As we reduce electronic devices in the school, we are excited to see more engagement in learning and in social interactions between students. Our goal is always to create the best learning environment possible at South Kearns Elementary.
