Dear Parents and Graduates:
After twelve years of hard work, students have finally reached the point of high school graduation. This event is an important milestone in a person’s life, and we congratulate students and their parents for this momentous accomplishment.
This year’s commencement exercise will be held in the Jon M. Huntsman Center at the University of Utah. The program will begin at 1 PM on Friday, May 26, 2017.
We hope you are looking forward to the graduation exercise as a highlight of the year’s activities. The Commencement Committee is working diligently to make it an outstanding event. We expect students to treat the occasion with dignity, as it is such a meaningful event for the entire family. Parents, please be respectful of the Huntsman arena while enjoying your student’s graduation. Taylorsville High will be charged a $250 fine for any large amounts of trash and for any confetti left in the stands of the Huntsman Center after our graduation exercises. Please do not bring balloons, confetti or shredded paper. We also request that our AUDIENCE conduct themselves in a respectful manner that will add to the significance of this occasion. Air horns, yelling out names, banging on drums, etc., detract from the dignified character of graduation. Every graduate and their parents have earned the right to have their names heard when announced. Please help us make this a “classy” event for all students and patrons.
Parents and students often have questions about commencement. We hope to answer those questions by providing the enclosed notes to help you in your planning. If this set of instructions does not give you the information you need, please call 385-646-5455 for more information.
Our PTSA will be hosting Senior Breakout, our grad night party, on Friday, May 26th, 10 pm – 6 am at the school. Entrance is $25 in advance through the Webstore. For full details, see the final entry in the enclosed information.
Best wishes for a happy graduation.

Chairs with backs provide comfortable seating for visitors of all ages, including elderly and handicapped persons. There will be adequate room for graduates to invite all family members and friends who desire to attend. Tickets will not be required.
- Dress for Graduates
Girls will wear caps and gowns. Girls should wear a street-length dress that will complement the gown, hose, and dress shoes. It will be helpful to take bobby pins and safety pins to hold caps and gowns in place.
Boys will wear caps and gowns. Boys should wear a dress shirt, tie, dress pants, socks, and shoes. (No athletic shoes or flip-flops).
STUDENTS WHO ARE INAPPROPRIATELY DRESSED OR DISPLAYING INAPPROPRIATE ACTIONS AS DETERMINED BY ADMINISTRATION OR TAYLORSVILLE POLICE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GRADUATION CEREMONIES.
- Cap and Gown Distribution
Caps and gowns will be distributed on Wednesday, May 17th, in the Cafeteria during both lunch periods. If students are unable to pick up their caps and gowns at that time, a parent should claim them for the student.
Graduating students must clear all fees and fines prior to picking up their cap and gown. Please return all library books and textbooks and clear any outstanding fines. Students still owing fees and fines at the time of Commencement Exercises will be denied participation.
Students who have not ordered a cap and gown should notify Jostens, 341 East 2100 South – 467-6968, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on weekdays. Gowns must be returned to portals 8 & 9 in the Huntsman Center at the conclusion of the graduation ceremonies. Students will keep their cap and tassel.
- Graduation Announcements
Students who ordered graduation announcements have already received them. Additional announcements may be ordered from Jostens. (Address and phone number above)
- Honor Society
Members of the National Honor Society are entitled to wear cords and collars on their graduation gowns. They will be available through Rachel Borrowman, the National Honor Society Advisor, immediately after graduation practice on May 26th. Cords and collars cannot be delivered once the ceremony has started. Graduates may keep their cords but need to return their collars to the Honor Society table after the commencement exercises, which will be located in The Lounge room between portals 2 & 3.
- Rental of Caps and Gowns is the Only Required Expense
Many companies are anxious to exploit students and parents by selling announcements, photographs, jewelry and various other souvenirs. Although Taylorsville provides the opportunity for students to purchase some of these items at school, this is done only as a convenience for the students. The only required expense is the rental fee for caps and gowns used in the commencement ceremonies.
- Rehearsal for Graduation
All students participating in the graduation ceremonies MUST attend a rehearsal at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 25th, in the Taylorsville High School auditorium.
- Diplomas and Refunds for Seniors
Graduating seniors will be given their refunds on Thursday, May 25th following Graduation Rehearsal. After this day, diplomas and refunds will not be available until May 30th between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Participation in the graduation ceremony is not required. It is required by those participating in the graduation ceremony to follow the procedures given in this letter. Seniors who are eligible to graduate from Taylorsville High School but do not attend the graduation ceremonies may pick up their diplomas on or after Tuesday, May 30th, in the main office of Taylorsville High between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
- Time to Pay School Fines
The office is in the process of compiling a list of all students who have outstanding fines or fees. If you know that your student owes money for any reason, you can eliminate the inconvenience of standing in long lines before cap & gown distribution on May 18th and before the Yearbook Preview Stomp on May 25th, by paying now. All students who have cleared their fees and fines may pick up their yearbook on May 26th for Yearbook Day.
- Graduation Clearance
A student’s graduation is not assured until he/she passes final academic and citizenship clearance.
- OTHER COMMONLY-ASKED QUESTIONS
ARE PARENTS ALLOWED IN THE LINE-UP AREA?
With over 500 graduates, there is far too much confusion if additional people are in the line-up area.
ARE PARENTS/PHOTOGRAPHERS ALLOWED NEAR THE AREA WHERE GRADUATES ARE SEATED?
All photographs should be taken before the ceremony begins or after the ceremony.
MAY PICTURES BE TAKEN OF THE GRADUATES WHILE THEY ARE RECEIVING THEIR DIPLOMAS?
Because of the problems created by parents and friends taking pictures near the graduation stand, we ask that all pictures be taken before or after the exercises. A professional photographer has been contracted to take individual pictures of each graduate receiving his/her diploma. These pictures will be made available to you at a reasonable cost.
IS THERE A PLACE TO KEEP PURSES AND/OR OTHER PERSONAL VALUABLES?
Graduates should not bring purses or other personal valuables to the graduation exercises because there is no place to secure them during the commencement exercises.
CAN MY PARENTS GIVE ME FLOWERS OR GIFTS AS I RECEIVE MY DIPLOMA?
Only graduates and assigned personnel will be allowed in the area where graduates are receiving their diplomas.
All lost & found items should be turned in to any member of the Graduation Committee of Taylorsville High or a JROTC member, not the Huntsman Center staff, and can be claimed in the main office at school.
WHEN DO I ACTUALLY RECEIVE MY DIPLOMA?
The diploma is received after each senior has properly participated in the graduation exercises. Immediately following the ceremony, each senior will turn in his/her gown at portals 8 & 9 and pick up his/her diploma in The Lounge room, located between portals 2 & 3.
DO I KEEP MY CAP AND TASSEL?
YES. Students are given the graduation cap and tassel as a remembrance of their graduation.
WHAT HAPPENS IF A STUDENT IS DISRUPTIVE DURING THE GRADUATION EXERCISES?
A student who is disruptive during the graduation exercises will be removed from the ceremony by a Taylorsville City Police officer and may be prosecuted. That individual’s diploma will be held at the school pending a hearing.
