What happens when a witch needs that one ingredient that doesn't want to cooperate?? A witch's favorite treat is frog soup. It's easy to make and healthy too. You add water, salt, pepper and 22 cloves of garlic! Potatoes, carrots and little fly extract round out the soup. But the main ingredient for a pop of color and a kick of flavor is frogs! You just have to get them onto the spoon and into the cauldron before they disappear, which ...
Week of 10/2
This week we are reading our 2nd Beehive picture book nominee of the year, Chez Bob by Bob Shea. Bob the alligator is quite lazy, and being lazy makes him hungry. So Bob comes up with a genius idea: he will start a birdseed restaurant on his nose! Birds will come to eat and Bob will eat the birds, super simple. He will be rich and famous, get diamond teeth and a solid-gold hat, and have a full tummy. But things don't go exactly as Bob plans, ...
Week of 9/25
This week in the library 4/5th graders are learning all about our Battle of the Books program! There are lots of ways to participate: students can read books from our list of 20 and earn prizes or they can read books, earn prizes, AND compete on a team in the Spring, where students test each other's knowledge of the books in a family-feud style competition. This is our 6th year participating in Battle of the Books at Upland Terrace! For more ...
Week of 9/18
It's the Book Fair! We are so excited to host the book fair this week in library: Tuesday and Wednesday, 4:00-7:00 pm. (Cash and cards accepted, sorry no Venmo.) This is an excellent opportunity to support our school while buying books your students will love. As in past years, we've partnered with The Story Cupboard to bring you a wide variety of books. And a portion of each purchase goes toward our school library, which more than doubles ...
Week of 9/11
This week we are reading our first Beehive Book of the year! Beehive Books are nominated by a committee of volunteers in Utah who look for the best in children's literature. But the unique thing about Beehive Books is that kids are the ones who vote for the winner. These books can be found at libraries throughout the state, where kids can vote on their favorites. At Upland Terrace, we read all of the picture book nominees together during ...
Week of 9/5
We're diving into library skills! This week I'm reading Meesha Makes Friends to all of our K-2nd grade students, while our 3-5th grade students are learning how to search for books on our library computers. Meesha is great at making things with paper and crayons, but what she really wants to do is make friends. This is hard for Meesha, who can't seem to find the right thing to say at the right time. But when she creates imaginary friends ...
Week of 8/28
We had an awesome author visit this week! W. Bruce Cameron spoke to our 3-5th grades on Wednesday about how he writes his books, his focus on animals, and his experience working in Hollywood. Maybe you've seen A Dog's Purpose, A dog's Journey or A Dog's Way Home? All three of these books have been made into movies! Bruce is launching a new series writing about working dogs. Zeus-Water Rescue comes out this week and Bruce will be at the ...
Welcome Back!
Regular Library time starts Monday, August 21! It's been great to be back in the library getting everything ready for students again. This year the library theme is "This is our Happy Place" and I truly believe that! I want each student to feel the library is a gentle, inviting space where they can come to learn, rest and read. We have so many good books, there is a truly a book for everyone! (And if I can't find that one book for a ...
Last Week of School!
Battle of The Books '23-'24 We are so excited to announce the list for next year's 4th/5th graders! At Upland Terrace, we have a committee of teachers and myself who read all year long to select books for the following year. We meet in the spring to pitch all of our favorite titles and come up with a working list. Then we spend an additional month doing more reading, rearranging and shuffling to finally come up with the 20 books we feel ...
Last Few Weeks of School
IT'S ALMOST SUMMER! We are down to just a handful of days left in this school year. What a great time we've had in the library this year- discovering new series, learning about cool subjects and finding our favorite books! I'm looking forward to a little break, but I will miss coming into the library first thing and seeing everyone's faces. It will be awesome to get back together in the Fall. No need to stop reading though! Kids can read ...
