The following statement was released by Granite School District Communications Department regarding extreme weather:
With the snowy weather today and anticipated snow in the forecast for the coming week, we wanted to remind you regarding our weather related closure policies and practices. Attached below is a link to our website where the full information can be found.
In short, over half of our 68,000 students are eligible for free and reduced school lunch and the also the breakfast program. Additionally, many families in our district do not have the means to provide for child care in the case of a school closure. Since so many of our families rely on our schools being open, warm and inviting places in snowy weather, our practice and policy has been to remain open if at all possible. These decisions are also based on our ability for our employees to arrive safely in time and for our transportation department to be able to function.
That being said, there are portions of our district where the topography lends itself to a great deal more snow than the rest of the district. We certainly don’t have the ability to look at your individual neighborhood street and tell you if it’s safe for you or your child to travel. As such, we continue to ask our parents to exercise their discretion in terms of making travel decisions in the best interests of their individual family. If you do not feel safe traveling in these winter conditions, please don’t! Stay home and stay safe. If you do have the ability to travel safely, our schools will be open and warm and ready to receive your child.
Our schools have and will continue to provide flexibility in terms of weather related tardies and absences. If you have any difficulties with respect to getting those tardies and absences resolved, please contact the School Accountability Department at 385-646-5000.
If there is a closure or delayed start, you will be notified using our phone and email system in addition to media notifications and announcements our district social media accounts. We encourage you to like our Facebook page (search Granite School District) and follow us on Twitter (@GraniteSchools).
We appreciate your understanding and support and hope you have a nice evening. If you have additional questions, please feel free to direct message us on this page.
