Dear Parents and Patrons,
We here at Westbrook Elementary need your help with a problem about which each of us has concerns; the safety of our children.
As administrator, I receive a number of complaints about the parking lot, picking up and dropping off students every year. The fact is that we have no funding to pay for help in directing traffic, and the Granite Police department is not large enough to meet the needs of every one of the 63 elementary schools plus the junior high schools and high schools in our district. I am often in meetings, or helping students, parents, and teachers both before and after school, making it difficult for me to be outside directing traffic, as well. All elementary schools have this problem, and we are collectively looking for solutions.
It really comes down to the fact that we each need to be more patient and courteous when picking up and dropping off students, and while driving in the parking lot. We all have busy schedules, but it is just not possible to accommodate all of our time schedules the way we wish.
Here are some concerns that have been brought to my attention:
- Some children are running through parked cars to get into their cars. A few people have reported seeing children almost hit in the parking lot.
- A few people blatantly ignore adult request to move cars off of the cross walk, handicap parking, and when double parked
- People parking in the red zones. Parking in red zones is against the law. Westbrook’s red zones are the same as they are in any other public place. Therefore, if you choose to park there, you may be ticketed.
- Double parking on the through ways
Please help all of us keep our kids safe. As you may know, my oldest son was hit and killed while crossing the street on his way to school. The driver didn’t see him, and in less than one second, his young life was ended.
Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter. Let us all work together to keep our kids safe.
