The most important thing parents can do to prepare their children for the next school year is to read, read, and read some more! When we have asked some of our students, “What do you read at home?” too many times, the response has been, “I don’t read at home.” We are begging for your help. We love your children and want them to succeed. They can’t do that without being able to read.
Last school year a second grade student completed her beginning of the year reading test above grade level. Her first grade end of year test showed that she was reading well below grade level. When the second grade teacher asked her what happened over the summer that made such a difference, the child said, “My grandma wouldn’t let me play video games until I did my reading first.” What a testament to the value of reading every day!
