Children are growing up in a digital world and it is important that parents and teachers help them learn how to be good digital citizens. Common Sense Media is the leading source of entertainment and technology recommendations for families. Below we found some Common Sense Media resources that give support and ideas on how to help your children be resilient digital citizens:

Can watching TV really help my kids? Research shows that watching TV and movies with your kids has a range of positive effects. Watch this video for five reasons why co-viewing makes sense for parents. (Versión en español aquí)

Do Cell phones get in the way of family time at the dinner table? Watch this #devicefreedinner video as a family and discuss what you can do to avoid this situation.

Are you concerned about you or your child’s excessive use of technology? In this video some parents candidly discuss the challenge of finding balance between using technology and unplugging.

At school we talk about “digital footprints.” A digital footprint is all of the information that exists on the internet as a result of a person’s online activity. One way to make sure you have a positive digital footprint is to T.H.I.N.K. before you Post–here’s what that means:

T – is it TRUE?

H – Is it HELPFUL?

I – Is it INSPIRING?

N – Is it NECESSARY?

K – Is it KIND?

We hope these resources can be a good place to start as you support your children in building healthy habits for digital citizenship. For other resources, please visit the Granite School District Digital Citizenship Page.
