Decker Flies High at USSL Academic Competition – by Paula, English Teacher, Decker Lake Youth Center
March 12, 2018—After four weeks of study session after study session, flash cards, drills, and some pretty amazing comradery, the Decker Lake Ducks showed how cool it is to be smart. Performing today at the USSL state competition, the Decker Lake Academic Team scored first in number of points scored in team competitions, second in the team championship round, and first in individual competition.
The day long event included five competitions against the secure centers, a championship round between the top two teams, and individual competition in which Decker’s MVP took control of this round from the very first question and never gave up the lead.
The competition included questions from every major high school discipline. With questions ranging from “Which Supreme Court case established principle of national supremacy and validity of implied powers?” to “What is the whip-like cell extensions which give the cell mobility?” (flagella) to “Who is the ghost who appears to Hamlet?” (Prince Hamlet’s father), Decker Lake ducks flew in perfect formation, answering these questions with lightning quick accuracy.
To our Decker Lake Scholars, thank you. Once again, you have shown that the very best is at Y.E.S.S.
