Today marks 12 years since the tragic events of September 11, 2001. For an elementary school, that’s a pretty interesting number. 12 years old is the age of our oldest students. That means (with exactly 10 days of an exception) none of the students in our school were alive on that day.
Obviously, if our students don’t fully comprehend the details of 9/11 yet, someday they will. My hope is they’ll also be able to understand the tremendous hope and unity our country demonstrated during the days and weeks that followed.
I fancy myself a runner. (I don’t like running . . . I just fancy myself a runner). I ran the St. George Marathon for my first time after 9/11. During the race just a few weeks after the twin towers fell, one of the runners in the race chose to carry a full-sized American flag the entire 26.2 miles of the course. His demonstration impressed me and has stuck with me since.
Although our Armstrong students weren’t yet born, I hope they someday appreciate the patriotism demonstrated during that time and the great heritage we all enjoy as part of this Nation.
