At Armstrong, we’re focused on four fundamental questions regarding student learning. They are: What do we want our students to learn? How will we know if they’ve learned it? How will we respond if they don’t learn it? How will we respond if they already know it? These questions help us turn from a focus on teaching to a focus on learning.
To answer the final two questions, each grade has begun a daily block of time known as flex time. During flex time, students are regrouped throughout the entire grade level based on the students’ mastery of the essential learning target. Students who have not demonstrated mastery of the learning target immediately receive intervention help in a smaller group setting. Likewise, students who have demonstrated mastery receive enrichment during flex time. The fluid nature of flex time allows us to continually focus on student learning needs in a very timely manner.
Watch for a feature on flex time in next week’s episode of ABC News.
