As an administrator, I’ve had the opportunity to visit and observe hundreds of classrooms over the last 4-5 years. Although I’ve seen many great things in many different schools throughout the state, I’ve never witnessed the caliber of instruction I see each day during my visits into the Armstrong classrooms. Across the board, we have the most talented educators I’ve ever had the privilege to associate with.
Armstrong teachers are dedicated to teaching the Utah Core Standards with an emphasis on the methodologies found in the science, technology, engineering, and math fields. Using a “launch-explore-discuss” lesson design allows for students to grapple with problems by posing possible solutions or theories, testing those theories, and then discussing why they did or did not work, much like scientists do.
During my classroom observations the first eleven weeks of school, I’ve recorded higher levels of student engagement than I have seen anywhere else. Students’ enthusiasm for the tasks and activities going on in their classrooms gets them thinking at higher levels than they otherwise would.
