Among the most powerful components of effective schools are Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). The term drives educators to collaborate intensely on answering the questions: What do we want our students to learn? How will we know if they’ve learned it? How will we respond if we don’t learn it? and How can we enrich and extend the learning for those who have already mastered it?
These questions shift schools from a focus on teaching to a focus on learning . . . but it’s not easy. Among the biggest challenges for teachers is finding enough time to collaborate in this manner. The Armstrong Community Council, however, has just taken an enormous step to help make this collaboration time possible.
In its LAND Trust plan for next school year, our Community Council has helped sponsor creative measures to provide teachers three 45-minute collaboration periods each week. This time will be a huge difference maker in allowing our teachers to meet the individual learning needs of all our students.
Thank you to the Armstrong Community Council for making this possible.
