For the March meeting of the Armstrong Community Council, members of the council approved the Armstrong LAND Trust plan for the 2015-16 school year and it is a lot like the current year’s plan.
Next school year’s plan will use the $45,000 in school trust land funds allocated to Armstrong to increase the percentage of students reading on grade level to 75 percent in first, second, and third graders by May 2016 and to boost the school-wide SAGE testing results in the areas of language arts, math, and science by May 2016. To see the targeted percentages and where those percentages were in May of last year, check out the newly approved LAND Trust plan on the Armstrong webpage.
The March meeting was also highlighted by a visit from Granite School District assistant superintendent Mike Fraser who provided the latest news on a STEM middle school. Starting with the 2016-17 school year, Westlake Junior High School will be the district’s designated STEM middle school giving students who are enrolled at Armstrong the opportunity to continue the STEM education experienced here at the middle school level. Westlake Junior High will be open in 2016-17 to both 7th and 8th-grade students within its boundaries as well as Granite District students who are accepted on open-enrollment permits. Though not specifically designated as STEM schools like Armstrong and Westlake, the district hopes to incorporate elements of STEM curriculum in other middle and high schools in the future.
Staffing at Armstrong next school year will include the addition of a sixth-grade teacher to accommodate the expected enrollment growth at that grade level. The projected student count next school year is projected to be just over 750.
The next community council meeting is April 19. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, we on the community council want to know so they can be discussed. Our contact information is on the Armstrong website.
