Redwood Elementary Reopening Plan
Communication and training
The following documents were used to provide guidance; USBE Reopening Requirements and Recommendations, Governor’s Office Phased Guidelines v4.7, Leavitt Partners Mitigating Risks Framework, and Granite School Districts’ COVID Response Phases.
The GSD communications department and Redwood Elementary will send out information to parents indicating how they can access both the district’s plan and each school’s individualized plans in their preferred/primary language.
A link to the school’s plans will be located on the school’s website for parents, students and teachers.
We will provide training to their teachers and staff during the first week back, August 17-21.
Entire staff will provide clear guidance/training for expectations/procedures to students the first few days of school. They will continue to reinforce teach and re-teach throughout the school year.
The principal will be the point of contact for questions or specific concerns
Accommodating Individual Circumstances (e.g., High-Risk, Personal Decisions)
We will share our plans for mitigating risk factors. For those students/families that would prefer to participate in distance learning, they may fill out a form letting us know their desire to do so, and we will accommodate their request. Staff that identify as high risk may reach out to our Human Resource Department, and we will provide reasonable accommodations.
During the weeks before school starts, administrators, social workers, and nurse will meet with parents to decide and facilitate whatever accommodations are needed.
School Schedules
Granite School District has three schedules that they are prepared to implement depending on what may be happening due to the virus. The three schedules are Regular, Modified, and Dismissal. With the regular schedule students K-12 will be allowed to attend every day using the board approved school calendar with increased safety and mitigation measures in place. We plan to use this schedule most of the time. The only time we would utilize another schedule for an individual class, grade, school, or the district, is if we were recommended to do so by the Health Department, the Governor’s office, or the USBE.
If it is deemed necessary that we reduce the number of students that are attending school, we will utilize a modified schedule. On a Modified Schedule, schools would operate on a split A/B schedule M-Th (Half the students in a class will come on Monday/Wednesday and half on Tuesday/Thursday.) Students not receiving face to face instruction will utilize distance learning or paper-based modules. On Fridays, all students will receive distance learning. Teachers will also use Fridays for planning, small group meetings, and interventions. Students would be divided alphabetically K-12 so students in the same families can be on the same schedule. Accommodations will be made on a case-by-case basis.
The third schedule would be a dismissal. We would only utilize a dismissal for a class, grade, school, or the district in the event of an outbreak and in consultation with the Health Department.
Monitoring Incidents
We will adopt the new Utah School Nurse Association (USNA) protocol for symptom monitoring.
These protocols will be emailed to all GSD staff.
School nurses will verify each site administrator has the protocols and answer questions.
Principals will review these protocols in opening staff meetings.

Transition Management Preparation
Mitigating Tactics for Specific School Settings
Classrooms
Teachers will spread children’s desks out as much as possible in the classroom. Desks will face forward.
At the end of the 2020 year, teachers were encouraged to declutter and throw away things that hadn’t been used in the last year.
Throughout the year, administration will continue to monitor physical spaces in rooms to ensure mitigation of risk factors.
Teachers will create schedules that will facilitate cleaning protocols at least once in the morning and once in the afternoon and during transitions.
Students will take everything (backpack, coat, etc.) home each day.
Transitions
Transitions will be coordinated by using different doors and different hallways for different classes or grades.
We have enough time and hallway to ensure that classes do not pass each other in the halls.
Students will be taught to fold arms in the hall and will walk on the right side of the hall.
Entry/Exit Points
BEGINNING OF THE DAY:
-Students have to go to their spot in line. They can do calisthenics or sit on the ground in their spot.
-They will not plan on the playground in the morning.
-We will ask the PE teacher to develop a “routine” they can do if they choose in their line spot.
Kindergarten will line up at the bottom of the ramp going into the cafeteria (where 6th grade used to line up). They will go in the cafeteria doors directly to their block class where they will eat breakfast and begin the class in this order: Ladia then Gutierrez.
1st grade will line up in their regular places next to Relo 8. They will go into the south parking lot door in this order: Robertson, Miller, Nuffer, Owen.
2nd grade will line up on the north side of the middle doors where they usually line up. They will go in first before the 3rd graders through the middle doors in this order: Loter, Cummings, Vantrease.
3rd grade will line up on the south side of the middle doors where they usually line up. They will go in after 2nd grade in this order: Kaminski, Littlewood, Johnson.
4th grade will line up out on the north side of the 4th/5th grade doors where they usually line up. They will go into those doors after 5th grade in this order: Gonzalez, Weagle, Glade.
5th grade will line up straight out the 4th/5th grade doors where they usually line up. They will go in first before the 4th grade in this order: Rowe, Chase, McCarrey.
Teachers will ALL help students walk in NOT in front of their class line but with one teacher out at the lines, one teacher at the doors, and one teacher in their respective halls.
END OF DAY:
-About 15 minutes before the end of the day, begin cleaning and sanitizing rooms.
-Each day students MUST take home all personal stuff like coats, etc.
Kindergarten will go out the front doors 5 minutes early.
1st grade will go out the 1st grade doors in order.
2nd grade will go out front doors in order.
3rd grade will go out middle doors.
4th grade will go out 4th/5th grade doors.
5th grade will go out cafeteria doors.
Each teacher will lead their class out to the after-school program, then parking lot, then front for bussing. They will line up students with bus kids in front of line, car kids next and then walkers.
Transportation
Students riding the bus will have masks, and transportation department will be spreading the students out on the bus as much as possible.
Students will be trained the first few weeks of school how to get on and off the buses as safely as possible.
Restrooms
Students will enter the bathrooms in the same way they have before (if the class is going, the teacher sends two or three students in at once.) The doors will be marked as an “in” door and an “out” door.
When students are in class, times will be assigned for when each class can send people.
Lunch/Cafeterias
LUNCH TIME AND RECESS OUTSIDE:
-Wash hands in classrooms. Put on pinnies over coats, etc.
-Stay on dots in hallway until class in front has moved.
-Teacher stays at her assigned “dot” until class has moved on.
-Kids sanitize hands when they get to the doorway into the serving area.
-Begin the year with cones out to help the students social distance as much as possible in waiting lines.
-Students will sit every other table spaced out as much as possible. Next grade level will sit at the opposite tables that were not used by the former grade level.
-Students will clean up their own area before leaving the lunchroom with paper towel wetted with solution
-Students sanitize their hands on the way out to recess.
Recess consists of “zone” areas where each class plays. The areas rotate each day. For example, on Mondays, Mr. G’s class plays on the blacktop, on Tuesdays, on the field, on Wednesdays walking on the half track, etc. This can be practiced by PE teacher.
Large Group Gatherings (e.g. assemblies, performances)
There will be no assemblies or performances live. If possible, we will live stream the performance and teachers can show their class on the smartboard.
Unique Courses with Higher Risk of Spread
BTS dance:
Class will be conducted outside when possible. If the weather does not permit, students will be distanced as much as possible.
Recess and Playground
NO MORNING OR AFTERNOON OUTSIDE RECESSES. BRAIN BREAKS IN CLASSROOMS INSTEAD.
Recess consists of “station” areas where each class plays. The areas rotate each day. For example, on Mondays, Mr. G’s class plays on the blacktop, on Tuesdays, on the field, on Wednesdays walking on the half track, etc. This can be practiced by PE teacher.
ZONES ON PLAYGROUND:
-Half-track: they can walk and do the activities on the half of the track closest to the playground
-Basketball courts: they can play basketball and play on the closest playplace
-West field: play running games out on the field and play on the most west playplace
-Blacktop: play four square, hopscotch, etc.
They will rotate around the zones and be in a different zone each day.
We are trying to find pinnies or sashes for them to wear so we can keep them separated better.
Special Education, Related Services, or School Counseling (e.g. School Psychologist, Speech Language Pathologist, etc.)
SpEd services will be provided regularly to students whose families decide that they can learn in person. If families choose distance learning, decisions will be made by the SpEd team about how to best meet the students’ IEP needs.
PD/Faculty Meetings
Our usual space for Faculty meetings and PD is too small to social distance, so meetings will be done online through Google Meet or other meeting software.

There will be one phone for student or patron use. It will be cleaned between each use.
For tardy students, attendance clerk will write tardies down instead of having them check in at the machine in the office.
P/T or SEP Conferences
We are planning on having SEP conferences on Zoom or Google Meet, so we don’t have to worry about people in halls or waiting at doorways.
Safety and Fire Drills
We will practice drills at different times. We will have one class per grade level at a time, going out the different doors that they have been assigned. One day a month will be designated for the drill, so it will take a little longer to get the drill done.
Patron Meetings
Patron meetings will be held online as much as possible.
SCC will be held online.
Our Community Center classes will be held to the same standards as the regular classrooms with appropriate social distancing and safety measures.
Our Community Center is located in one of the end-of-the-hall rooms, so there will be no parents in the halls of the school
Library/Media Centers
Students will check out one book each week. Books will need to sit overnight before being able to be checked out again.
IEP/Special Ed Meetings
IEP and other SpEd meetings with patrons will be held online on Google Meets, Microsoft Teams, etc.
Multipurpose Room
No assemblies will be held unless we can figure out how to stream them into classrooms instead of bringing everyone together.
PE will be held outside, if possible and if not, students will be spaced out as much as possible in the MP room.
Hallways
Students will travel through hallways spaced out as much as possible. Vinyl markers will be placed throughout halls so teachers and students will know how to space their lines.
