The school year is rapidly drawing to a close. One of the most important things you can do to help students remain prepared for the next year is to encourage them to read every day for at least 20-30 minutes. For students in the lower grades, at least half of their reading should be done out loud. Reading out loud allows others to correct mistakes and helps build fluency. Taking time out to read while your child reads will relay the message that reading is important for everyone. There are several summer reading programs that provide great incentives for students who read daily. Some are listed below.
Utah State Fair – April through July – earn a free pass to the Utah State Fair
Barnes and Noble – throughout summer – earn a free book
Papa Murphys – throughout summer – earn a free pizza
Utah State Office of Education – thoughout summer
Academy Park – throughout summer – earn prizes and free books
When you give your child a love of reading, you give a gift that lasts a lifetime.
