RED RIBBON WEEK OCT 22–25—Thanks again to our PTA for provided this great activity to remind students to stay away from harmful substances. Here are the themes for each day:
Oct 22—Backward Day “You’d be backwards to use drugs”
Oct 23—Hat Day “Think with your head and don’t do drugs”
Oct 24—Crazy Hair Day “Don’t be crazy and use drugs”
Oct 25—Spirit Day “Wear red to show your promise to not use drugs”
ROAD TO SUCCESS—Our school is partnered with Fox 13 Road to Success Reading program which is sponsoring a Halloween Read a Thon. (See flyer attached) We invite families to participate and log your children’s reading minutes. Our PTA also tracks reading minutes so please consider setting up a Road to Success account by going to rtsutah.com.
COMMUNITY CENTER—We have a great Family Engagement Center that supports parents and families in all kinds of great ways. Please come visit on Tuesdays 11:00—6:00 or Thursdays 8:00—3:00.
LAND TRUST SUMMARY—Land Trust funds are given to our school by the state each year. Last year we received $50,000. The funds were used to pay for an intervention teacher who worked with small groups of children on important reading skills. The funds also paid for an instructional aide to monitor children in the computer lab as they used ST Math and other educational software while their teachers met in collaborative grade level teams. These teacher teams have been working hard to develop lessons and assessments that help children meet the standards of the core curriculum. In addition, $5000 was spent on the ST Math licenses that were needed so that all children in grades K-4 could benefit. Our school community council is important to the decisions about how to use Land Trust funds each year. Please visit our school webpage for more information about the School Community Council.
SCHEDULE—Thursday is the last day of the term and a short day. Friday is a teacher work day but no school for students. Report cards will go home on Thursday, November 1st.
BUSINESS PARTNERS—Along with Discover Financial, Walker Edison Furniture, USANA, and many individual donors, we welcome Stonehaven Dental as our most recent partner in support of Playworks at Academy Park. They will also provide dental hygiene bags and some pointers on healthy teeth for all students on Thursday just before our Red Ribbon assembly. Thanks, also, to PTA for scheduling a cool magic show Red Ribbon assembly that teaches kids to stay away from drugs. Dental hygiene kits at 10:15 and magic show at 10:30.
HALLOWEEN—Once again, our annual parade begins at 8:45 on October 31st in the gym. Please be seated by 8:30 so we can have our annual Title 1 parent meeting before the show. I know you are so excited to hear from your principal about our school goals and progress toward achieving them! Our PTA will also announce the winners of the $50 gift certificates for joining PTA this year. Your child’s teacher will send more details about the various Halloween activities that will take place after the parade. If you want to volunteer that day, please let your child’s teacher know ahead of time so they can plan for you. PLEASE!
