Fun and Eventful

We appreciate all who supported our Neon fundraiser, which ends tomorrow evening.  Students are excited for the upcoming rewards, and it is a close race for the grade level Classic Skating reward. Today we have met our goal of $15,000 and hope to raise $20,000!

 We also had a successful Safety Week sponsored by our PTA.  Students learned many valuable lessons and had activities on: Anti Bullying, Internet Safety, Pedestrian and Bike Safety, Say No to Drugs, and Stranger Danger.

 The Halloween Parade was fantastic! Our students really enjoyed the parade, the varied activities, and classroom parties.  Thank you to ALL the parent volunteers who helped with class parties and those who came to support the parade!

 Principal’s Notes

 I look forward to November and the holidays to spend with family and friends. November is a wonderful month for our families to reflect on what we are grateful for each day.  As I contemplate the things which I am thankful for, I feel much more lighthearted, and am reminded of what wonderful colleagues, friends, and family I have.  I enjoy many aspects of my life and the beautiful surroundings we live in.   I am especially thankful for the opportunity to be the principal of Crestview and am developing wonderful associations with the staff, students, and parents.  I always appreciate the relationships and kind words which are a part of our Crestview community.   You are all wonderful people, and I gain so much from each of you.  Parents, you have amazing children, and I appreciate all you do for them and the school!  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends and enjoy every moment together.

 Email Etiquette

 At Crestview we are committed to maintaining a positive and respectful school environment to enhance our school culture and retain teachers.  Throughout the year we receive many positive emails to teachers which boosts morale.  We also receive a few harsh emails, which can be devastating to teachers and impact the school climate. We kindly ask that you pause before reacting to your child’s comments about their teacher or another student until you have heard both sides of the story. The first step to problem solving any issue is to contact the teacher directly. The second step is to include the teacher and principal in an email.   The final step is to set up a meeting with the teacher and principal if the issue remains unresolved.

 Resolving Concerns and Conflicts:

 Begin with Patience and Understanding: Teachers, students, and parents share the common goal of student success.

1. Remain Respectful and be Clear in your Language: Clearly outline the issue and your concerns but do so respectfully.  Focus on finding solutions and avoid emotionally charged comments.
2. Focus on Problem Solving: Instead of attributing blame, focus on how to move forward to resolve the conflict.
3. Provide Positive Feedback when applicable. Teachers give their hearts to education and need to hear the good they do as well.
4. Allow reasonable time (24 hours) for the teacher to respond to emails. Teachers have a myriad of responsibilities, personal lives in the evenings, and an average of 27 students to manage daily.

Crestview has a fantastic staff and community, and I appreciate ALL your efforts to make Crestview the most amazing and magical place for everyone!

 Lost and Found

 Please ask your children to stop by and check the lost and found for missing items.  In December, just before the break, we donate all the items to charity.

November promises to be an exciting month at Crestview! So many fun things are happening! As we transition from Halloween to the school play and the holidays, please watch out for ways that you can get involved!

Thursday Nov 7^th – Reflections Showcase: If your student turned in reflections project this year, please come support them at 9:00 am in the gym.

Thursday Nov 14th – Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day! Please join us for our second  annual Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day and help us celebrate Ruby Bridges and encourage kindness, inclusivity and unity in our school and community. We will be meeting at southwest corner of the school field (near the fence) at 8 am      to distribute swag. We will walk to the front of the school as a group at 8:15.

Nov 20^th -22^nd – Crestview Performance Presents: Alice in Wonderland Jr. – Please join us to watch our 4^th and 5^th graders perform in the school play! There are lots of wonderful opportunities to watch the show and volunteer!

We are looking forward to one of the most exciting days for our students, Halloween!

On Thursday, October 31, at 9:00am we will begin our parade by picking up all the students inside the building. All guests will be outside until the parade ends.  About 9:10 the parade will exit out the west door for parents to observe, cheer, and take pictures.  The parade will wind around the entire perimeter of the school and along the sidewalks. 

Class parties will begin after the parade and room parents will coordinate with teachers for activities and times. Parents, please stay outside until the parade ends for parties, it takes a few minutes for classes to wind through the school back to their classes. 

Remember: No Halloween masks or weapons; and follow the school dress code for costumes.  If you have questions, please contact the office.

Principal’s Notes

Hello Crestview Cougars!  October is always an exciting month, and I look forward to all the fun activities and watching the incredible learning taking place. Our teachers are top notch, and I am honored to work with such a fine staff.  I enjoy being the principal at Crestview and love being with the students and watching them grow.  I appreciate the family support that comes with a great community.

Our PTA and Community Council are also amazing!  Courtney Whelan is our PTA president and Marissa Skinner is the Community Council Chair.  They both give a tremendous amount of effort and a wealth of support in a variety of ways to the school.  Thank you!!!

Congratulations Crestview Teachers and Students

Tonight at 7:00 at the Granite School District Board Meeting Crestview is receiving and award for being in the top five schools for growth on RISE testing last spring. This is a great accomplishment and shows the dedication and hard work of all of our staff and students. 

Halloween Parade

Our Halloween parade will be on October 31 and will start at 9:00 am.  The parade will be outside for parents; feel free to bring lawn chairs and high impact cameras! This is a very fun day for all! Masks or fake weapons are not allowed.   Costumes need to be school appropriate as well as meeting the school’s dress code.  Parties will be in classrooms after the parade.  Room parents may coordinate with teachers for the times and activities.  More information will come about the parade route.  If you have any questions, please contact the office.

School Fundraiser

Near the end of October, we will have a school fundraiser with many fun rewards planned for students.  This will be a no fuss fundraiser with a simple donation and the school will receive 100% of the funds.   These funds are necessary for student supplies, field trips, assemblies, rewards, and technology needs. We appreciate your support!  More information to follow!

Gifted Testing

The testing window for placement in Granite School District’s Advanced Learner Programs for the 2025-2026 school year will be October 1 – December 13 for grades 3-5, and January 13 – March 12 for grades K-2.

Testing at Crestview Elementary will occur on November 18^th and 19^th  for grades 3-5. It is not necessary to have your child tested each year, however, children who want to be considered for placement in the Advanced Learning Center (ALC) Program at Morningside Elementary must participate this year in the assessments. In addition, students in their last year of elementary school who are interested in taking Gifted and Talented classes in junior high must be tested this year. Please note that students entering junior high next year will be asked at the time of testing which junior high they plan to attend.  Your child’s scores will be sent to the junior high indicated.  It is not necessary for students planning to register for honors classes in junior high to be tested. 

If you would like your child to participate in the Advanced Learner testing or if you have any questions, please notify Emily Saltas (edsaltas@graniteschools.org) by October 25^th.

Cold Weather and Arrival Times During the School Year

Please have your students wear appropriate clothing for the cooler weather. We have outside recess almost every day in the winter.  Also, if your child is eating breakfast in the school cafeteria, please do not drop them off before 8:15 a.m. This is for their safety. For children not eating breakfast at school, please do not drop them off earlier than 8:25 a.m. If it is a seriously rainy/snowy day, or the temperature is 20 degrees or lower, students will be allowed inside the  hallways by their teacher’s room at 8:25 a.m.

Community Council Focus: SAFETY

October is School Safety Month!  Please be extra cautious on or around school grounds!

Drop-Off Safety Tips:

1. Follow School Rules: Always adhere to the school’s designated drop-off zones and times.
2. Stay in Designated Areas: Only drop off children in designated areas to avoid unnecessary traffic and congestion.
3. No Double Parking: This can block visibility for other drivers and is dangerous for students crossing the road.
4. Use Crosswalks: Always encourage your child to use crosswalks with crossing guards if available.
5. Stay Alert: Avoid distractions like phones while driving in school zones.
6. Avoid Speeding: Stick to the school zone speed limit.
7. Be Aware of Pedestrians and Cyclists: Watch out for children who may cross the street unexpectedly.
8. Do Not Let Kids Exit in Traffic: Ensure kids exit from the sidewalk side, not into oncoming traffic.
9. Parents may use e-bikes in the front turn around only. Otherwise, e-bikes are not permitted on school grounds.

 Pick-Up Safety Tips:

1. Arrive on Time: Plan to arrive on time and not block traffic lanes.
2. Obey the Traffic Flow: Follow any directions provided by the school staff or signs to ensure smooth traffic.
3. Stay in Your Car (if required): If the school has a drive-thru pick-up, stay in your vehicle to keep the line moving.
4. No U-turns: Avoid making U-turns in the school zone to prevent accidents.
5. Use Child Restraints: Ensure children are securely fastened with seat belts or in the correct car seat.
6. Don’t Leave Unattended Cars: Never leave your car idling or unattended in drop-off zones.
7. Look Around: Always check for children crossing behind or in front of your vehicle before moving.
8. Be Patient: Pick-up times can be hectic; remain calm to avoid accidents.

By following these safety tips, you can help create a safer environment for students and other drivers during school drop-off and pick-up times.

Upcoming Events

Friday, October 12- Reflections submissions are due online at utahpta.org. This year’s theme is “Accepting Imperfections”. Students can use this theme to create original works of art in the categories of Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, 2D Visual Arts, and 3D Visual Arts. Rules and eligibility can be found at utahpta.org

Tuesday, October 8^th from 5-7:30pm – Chick-Fil-A Community Night at the Murray Chick-Fil-A! Come join us at Chick-Fil-A for a fun community night and support our PTA. More information will be sent home with students.

October 31^st – Halloween Parade and Parties

We had an exhilarating first three days of schools and are thrilled to be back!  We are excited to start a new year at Crestview with all our students and give a special welcome to our new students and faculty members:

Scott Taylor-Intern Assistant Principal, Paul Jenkins-3rd grade teacher, Sam Mitchell- STS (Computer Specialist) and Lynette Jacobsen- Art teacher.

Our teachers are fantastic and have worked diligently to ensure students have a successful school year.  Teachers have spent many extra hours on behalf of our students to keep them safe and to prepare them for their future in education.  I really appreciate their professionalism and dedication towards education.

Community Council

We have a few openings on our Community Council this year!  If you are interested, pick up a ‘Declaration of Candidacy Forms’ in the office.  The forms are due on August 21 at 3:20. The council is a platform which involves the community in discussing critical issues, and voting on how Trust Land money is spent. If you are interested, we would love to have you participate.  The meetings are open for anyone to attend, if you choose to not to apply to be a member.  The meetings dates and times will be posted on the school website once we have all members established.

School Policies and Updates

•    Arrival/Pick-Up Times:  Student arrival times in the morning are between 8:25-8:35.   For students eating breakfast, arrive between 8:15-8:25. Pick up times are 3:20 on regular days and 1:15 on early out days.  Please pick up your children no later than 10 minutes after the excusal bell rings.
•    Pet Owners: “Dogs and other pets are not permitted on Granite School District property at any time during school activities or when students are present; this includes after school activities, athletic events, etc.” (Service animals may be an exception and must meet the requirements set for in Granite Board.) Policy Article IX.A.1.y
•    Granite School District Phone Policy including Cell Phones/Watches/Technology Devices: Granite School District policy prohibit the use of personal electronic devices during school hours in grade K-8 (Article VIII.A.24)
Crestview Elementary is not responsible for any personal property which is lost, stolen, or vandalized.
•    Bikes, scooters, skateboards, rollerblades: Students and guests may not ride on school grounds for the safety of all students.
•    Parents on Bikes: Please do not ride your bikes on school grounds, as it is very dangerous with hundreds of students playing on school grounds.

PTA Corner – August 2024

I want to take a minute and welcome everyone back for another exciting year at Crestview! There are so many wonderful opportunities to volunteer in the school and show our teachers appreciation and our kids that we want to help build their school community.  Please sign up as a PTA member so you can be in the loop about volunteer opportunities and help needed throughout the school year. •    Aug 23: 8:00 am – Books and Bagels! Have your kids bring back their reading logs from the summer and turn them in for admittance to books and bagels

•    Aug 27,28:  After school- School Play auditions, 4th and 5th graders are invited to participate in the Crestview performance of Alice in Wonderland Jr. – Play packets with more information will be sent home with students.

•    Sept 5:  12pm – Meet the Masters parent training. If you are interested in helping with our Meet the Masters art program and teaching an easy art lesson to your child’s class, please reach out.

•    Sept 12:  10am – Monthly PTA Meeting – Please come and learn about what is happening at Crestview!

•    Sept 16,17:  Book Fair – Come check out the book fair during SEP conferences!

•    Sept 19:  7:45 am – All Pro Dads – Calling all father figures! Please come and join our chapter of All Pro Dads! Bring your kids and enjoy a light refreshment before school.

Greetings Crestview Families!

I hope you have enjoyed some sunshine and fun this summer!  I have missed you all and look forward to your return to school. Online registration begins July 29.  With thousands of families trying to register the first day, sometimes the system crashes, so you might wait a few days to register. (See Attachment) New students, including kindergarteners, need to register at the front office starting July 29-August 2 from 9:00-2:00.

Once you register online, you will receive your child’s class placement. Please note that teachers took careful consideration for placing each student.  Classes are also balanced with boy-girl ratios, academic abilities, behaviors, and learning environment requests. I have great confidence in all the teachers at Crestview, and know your children are in good hands.

Back to School Night will be on Tuesday, August 13 from 4:00-5:00 to meet teachers and gain insights into your child’s education for the year.  PTA will be in the gym for sign-ups and other information for the upcoming school year.   We look forward to seeing you! 

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 14 from 8:40-3:20. Kindergarten will be excused early at 1:15 on August 14, 15, 16.  All students are excused at 1:15 each Friday throughout the year.  Students who picked up after school, please arrive no later than 10 minutes after school is dismissed.
