ATTENDANCE Procedures – Parents and Guardians
A big part of student success is regular attendance.
Research shows that students who attend every class:
•Earn better grades.
•Have a higher self-esteem.
•Are more likely to go to college or pursue career training after high school.
•Hold higher paying jobs as adults.
The U.S. Department of Education reports that for every missed day of school, it takes students two days to catch up since they must make up missed learning and catch up with new learning at the same time.
Students that arrive on time participate in valuable instructional time. Absent and tardy students miss out on discussions, questions, explanations, opportunities to show proficiency and much more.
The expectation for students at Skyline High School is to attend every class, every day, on time.
Students who successfully demonstrate good attendance will:
•Receive rewards for excellent attendance.
•Be invited to quarterly socials during class time.
•Receive positive reinforcement in classrooms (R.I.S.E. cards).
Students who demonstrate poor attendance may:
•Be required to complete a weekly attendance tracker.
•Receive an afterschool detention.
•Be invited to attend a parent/student conference.
•Receive a behavior/attendance contract.
What parents can do to help students stay engaged in school:
•Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day.
•Help your children maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
•If your children must stay home because they are sick, make sure they check canvas or with their teachers for resources and materials to make up for the missed learning time in the classroom.
•Find out if your children feel engaged in their classes and safe in school.
•Check that your teen is not missing class because of social/school related challenges.
•Monitor your teen’s academic progress on Focus. https://www.graniteschools.org/infosystems/parent-portal-resources/
•Stay on top of your child’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school, while students without many friends can feel isolated.
•Encourage your child to join meaningful after-school activities, including sports and clubs.
•Notice and support your students if they are showing signs of anxiety.
Attendance is closely tied to academic success, student safety, and positive engagement. Our goal for students is that they attend regularly and find enjoyment and growth in school. Skyline High School is committed to partnering with parents to support students’ academic and social and emotional well-being.
PARENT EXCUSAL POLICY:
Excusals may be requested via phone call 385-646-5433 or email skylineattendance@graniteschools.org.
Please be specific. Provide student name, student number, date, period(s), returning or not, etc.
Parents have Ten (10) school days from the day of an absence to excuse it. Day-of excusals or contacting the office before the absence is best practice. Parent excusals cannot be completed after 10 school days. If you are leaving on a vacation, please notify the attendance office before your departure to avoid missing the excusal timeframe. The exception to the ten day rule comes up at the end of each term. During the last week of each term, absences should be excused on the day of and will not be extended after the term has ended.
Granite District policy allows parents to excuse up to SEVEN (7) days in a school year. Medically necessary absences do not count toward the seven days if a signed doctor note is provided within 10 days of the absence.
Quickly call the Attendance Office by using the Skyline High School App! Click on the Attendance Symbol at the bottom of the screen then click on “Call (385) 646-5433” to call the Attendance Office.
TARDY/LATE to CLASS:
Arriving late is disruptive for students and teachers. Students should strive to be on time and work with their teacher in extenuating circumstances. Students are considered tardy if they arrive to class after the final bell. After 15 minutes late, a student may be considered truant. Poor attendance and tardiness may affect graduation status.
STREET PASSES:
When requesting a street pass, please follow the protocols below:
Email or call in the morning –When contacting the attendance office, please include the student’s name and student ID number, the time the student will be leaving, if they will be returning (and when that will be, if possible). If you choose to email, please use the email address you have listed as your contact for Skyline so we can verify it is legitimate.
Plan ahead – Because students are in class, it takes time to check students out of school. Call at least 30 minutes before the check out time to provide enough time for the student to be picked up. In the case of an emergency, we will do our best to be quick and efficient in checking your student out. Street passes for a time during lunch should be requested before the lunch hour. (If you know your student is leaving at lunch for the rest of the school day, a street pass does not need to be issued, but you will need to excuse them from the missed afternoon classes.)
Check in and out- When a street pass is requested, students can pick it up in the attendance office in the morning, during lunch, or between classes. Students should show their teacher the street pass before class starts. If a student is returning later in the day, they should check back into the attendance office with their street pass. We will then excuse them from any missed classes and send them to class.
