  • Rain / lightning / extreme wind: All students will remain indoors until the weather event passes; recesses will be moved indoors; upon morning arrival, students will be directed into the building.
  • Snow: Recesses may be moved indoors if precipitation is wet, heavy, or accompanied with extreme wind or cold.
  • Temperature: All students will remain indoors during morning arrival and lunch recess when temperature is below 20 degrees (feels like, or wind chill temperature); teachers may use discretion for a quick outside break (less than 5 minutes) during regularly scheduled afternoon recess time.
  • Air quality: The Utah Department of Health sets recess guidelines for poor air quality days; West Kearns Elementary follows these guidelines:
    • When the Particulate Matter (PM2.5) level is between 35.5 and 55.4 µg/m3, “sensitive” students and those experiencing respiratory symptoms may remain indoors
    • When the PM2.5 level is 55.5 µg/m3 or higher, recess will be moved indoors for all students
    • The West Kearns office will monitor air quality throughout the day from the Utah Department of Health’s web-site: air.utah.gov
