Hello Eastwood Families –
More KUDOS for our teachers and students – The Utah State Board of Education’s report compiled by The National Center for the Improvement of Education Assessment, Inc. in November of 2021 mentions Eastwood Elementary!!! This is a study measuring the effects of COVID-19 pandemic in student achievement in Utah and recognizes Eastwood as a school who demonstrated Pandemic Resilience. Only 3 Granite School District elementary schools were recognized (Eastwood, Cottonwood and Robert Frost) one junior high (Evergreen) and two high schools (Skyline & Olympus). Eastwood’s was recognized as a top school in the area of 5th grade mathematics as measured by RISE.
Your child may have told you that they stayed inside for morning recess then were required to stay on the blacktop for lunch and afternoon recesses. It was cold this morning and the hill was muddy however, the real cause was we had a “visitor” on campus this morning, a coyote. The coyote was was first spotted it was outside of our fence line on the east end. Austin, our custodian, was able to scare it away but we did not take any chances. We called animal control but were told that they could do nothing about it and assured us that the coyote would probably not return. We greatly increased the number of adults who were outside supervising kids and kept the students as far as possible from the area of the sighting. A recent article on KSL.com shares information from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources regarding coyotes (WildAwareUtah) states that coyotes are generally a threat to small house pets after dark and that creating loud noises usually scares them off.
On Tuesday, February 1, 2022 your child will bring home some important paperwork for you to complete. We need to know for school year 2022-2023 if your child will be returning to Eastwood and if you will have any new students starting with us. Please return it as soon as possible as this information is critical in determining classroom configurations as well as how may students we can accept on Out of Boundary permits.
Thanks for all you do! Naomi Hopf – principal
