Guidelines

  1. A student may receive only one open enrollment options transfer per school year.
  2. Granite School District students, children of a military servicemember, and applicants who have a sibling in the requested school will be given first priority for acceptance. All other applications will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  3. Written notification of acceptance or denial will be given to the parent/legal guardian as follows:
    1. For applications received during the Early Enrollment period—by March 31.
    2. For applications submitted during the Late Enrollment Period for admission in the next school year—by the Friday before the new school year begins.
    3. For applications submitted during the late enrollment period for admission in the current school year—within two weeks after receipt of the application.
  4. Each application will be considered on an individual basis based on available space by building, grade, class, or program.
  5. Applications may be denied, or revoked, to those who have committed serious infraction of the law or have been guilty of chronic misbehavior which would, if it were to continue, endanger persons or property, cause serious disruption in the school, or place unreasonable burdens on school staff.
  6. Students with other prior behavior problems may be granted enrollment with a provisional enrollment agreement, establishing conditions under which enrollment of a nonresident student would be permitted or continued. Violation of these conditions can result in the application being revoked.
  7. A student will be expected to honor an Open Enrollment for the complete school year.
  8. Yearly reapplication IS NOT NECESSARY to continue at the same school.
  9. Reapplication IS REQUIRED when a student progresses from elementary to junior high or from junior high to high school, and the intended school of enrollment is not their residential boundary school. It is strongly recommended to submit a proper application during the Early Enrollment Period, November 15 through the first Friday in February.
  10. A student may be excluded from enrollment for the coming school year if the school has enrollment above the open enrollment threshold, with written notification from the school no later than March 15 of the current school year.
  11. The parent/student is responsible for transportation to and from the requested school, except as provided in Utah Code 53G-6-405(3)(b) which allows students to ride on established routes on a space-available basis, providing no additional costs will be incurred by the district.
  12. Utah High School Activities Association guidelines/policies will be followed for students who want to participate in interscholastic competitions.
  13. False or misleading information will result in cancellation of the application or revocation of enrollment.
  14. Any decision or action taken upon provisions of this law may be appealed to the school board through the Prevention & Student Placement office.
  15. Students from outside Granite School District who wish to apply for placement in junior high Gifted and Talented Programs should go to the GSD Web Site to the Gifted & Talented homepage to register the child for a testing session.
