In addition to our monthly mobile health clinic and mobile food bank visits, we would like to thank Joe Tedrow (School Counselor) and Scott McLeod (Community School Coordinator), for their other efforts on behalf of the Granger Family.  Some of these are the many things done for families this past Christmas Season, which include:

25 children did the “Shop with a Cop”

12 families received $100 Walmart Certificates from United Way

50 families received a turkey from Sweet Charity Sisters

1,050 gift bags from Sweet Charity Sisters

30 blankets were donated by private families

13 students helped with Sub for Santa

50 students got coats and clothes from Operation School Bell

100 Jackets from United Way

The kind and generous people at CHG Healthcare came to Granger Elementary on Friday December 13, 2013 and threw a great big party for our After School Program. Over 25 volunteers prepared fun activities for all the kids in the After School Program. The party started with decorating sugar cookies for the kids to take home. After that, the kids got to make holiday wreaths and decorate them with all sorts of fun stickers. Then the kids got to make fun glitter ornaments, where they filled the ornament ball full of glitter and decorated the outside as well.  Once the crafts were over we enjoyed story time with one of the volunteers at CHG Healthcare. Lastly was the countdown. All the kids counted down from five, once they got to number one the stage curtains opened and there were gifts for everyone! All the kids were so excited to receive something new. They gave out things many of the kids really needed, like shoes and coats as well as a fun toy for everyone. The After School Program could not be more grateful for the people at CHG Healthcare for putting on such a fun day for the kids as well as buying them so many things they needed this holiday season. The After School Program wants to Thank CHG Healthcare for the awesome party and the great time we had with all the volunteers!

 

Early Saturday morning, long before the sun even came up, Granger Elementary was alive with action. At first, it was just Granger staff, dedicated volunteers, and the incredibly generous sponsors running around trying to prepare the day’s events. By 6:30am, there was a line of over 100 families, all waiting for the event to begin. And by 10am over 1000 children and parents had streamed through Granger Elementary gearing up for the 2013-2014 school year. Now THAT is what I call a Back to School Bonanza!
The event, generously sponsored by Molina Healthcare, was put on to help Granger students and families start the year off right. To that end, Molina donated brand new backpacks filled with school supplies, beautiful books for children of all ages, and stylish shoes in the color and style of their choosing. Not only that, but they invited partners from many different organizations to come on down and help out. Kids could get a brand new haircut from Sports Cuts, a free well-child exam from Utah Partners for Health’s mobile health clinic, for those students not up to date on their immunizations, they were able get them free of charge from Community Nursing services, and for those in need of glasses, Eye Care for Kids was there to get them started with an eye exam.
The party was just as big outside with many more things going on! First and foremost, the place was bumping with loud and moving Zumba classes taught by United Way’s very own Courtney Archer! Super Savers donated an incredible amount of fruit and water to all those poor souls who missed breakfast. Wal-Mart was helping families with additional supplies. Washington Federal was helping children enroll in save-at-school bank accounts. And Granger faculty and staff were getting kids excited for the new year with demonstrations of their upcoming curriculum. To top it all off, Fox13 did live interviews with Big Buddha, Telemundo was there to capture the action, and ABC4 showed up to make sure they didn’t miss out!
All in all, in was an amazing way to start the year. As a Community School, our goal is to achieve an incredible education by addressing the needs of our children and families. This means helping out with things like school supplies, but it also means creating a community environment and building relationships where families are empowered to thrive. The Granger Back to School Bonanza was the perfect way to begin this process, and I for one am deeply grateful to the partners, volunteers, businesses, and organizations who helped make it possible. The United Way is one of our in-house business partners that brings so many exciting things to our school. They provide so many opportunities for our students to be served with things like dental and medical clinics as well as other special events throughout the year. Thank you United Way!
