Dear Parents & Students,
Since the tragic events in Florida, the district has experienced a spike in students making phony threats or joking about violence at school. (This also includes the improper use of Safe UT app.) While the intent may be in jest, these jokes are anything but funny.
All threats of violence are taken seriously and investigated by police, even off-hand comments that appear as ‘obvious’ jokes. Those who make threats, even as a joke, will be charged and receive school and district level discipline in addition to the very real possibility of criminal charges.
Please take this opportunity to remind your students that making light of serious matters will bring severe consequences. Although they may think their comment or social media post will only be seen by their close friends, their actions can cause a chain reaction that will quickly move beyond their control. (University Admission Officers & future employers frequently review applicants social media “footprints”.)
We encourage all parents to be vigilant in monitoring their student’s online behavior. Most of the incidents that have led to students landing in serious trouble were tied to a social media post or some other online comment.
As always, we implore students and families to use the SafeUT app and District Safety Hotline to report unsafe or suspicious behavior. The KHS Administrative Team can also take your reports/concerns directly. Thanks for your help and support in keeping our students safe.
