Good Evening Parents and Students:
I hope this email finds you and your family doing well and making every effort to stay safe and healthy. As Governor Herbert has moved us into the “yellow phase” in an effort to reopen the state, we at Kearns High will continue to move forward with caution and everyone’s safety in mind.
As we approach the end of the school year I would like to share some necessary information:
Monday, May 18th: We will be collecting Chromebooks and textbooks in the main hall by grade levels. You will need to return these items IF you have completed your school work and will not need to work through the summer on incomplete grades. Please email your grade level administrator if you need to keep your device or any textbooks. Please remember to charge the Chromebook and bring the charging cable back with the device. To keep everyone safe, we are requesting that each grade level come into the main hall during the following times: (Masks are recommended when you enter the building)
Freshman 8:30-9:30
Sophomores 9:30-10:30
Juniors 10:30-11:30
Seniors 11:30-12:30
Tuesday, May 19th: Yearbook distribution will take place in the north parking lot on the curb. Please bring a photo ID and direct any additional questions to ahurd@graniteschools.org. Detailed instructions are posted on the website, the times are as follows:
Freshman 10:00-11:00
Sophomore 11:00-12:00
Juniors 12:00-1:00
Seniors 1:00-2:00
Wednesday, May 20th: Students with paper packets to turn in may do so in the main hall from 8:00-2:00. We will accept paper packets through May 26th (excluding May 21st due to graduation ceremonies) from 8:00-2:00. We will not be accepting them on the 27th as teachers will have until 3:00 pm to post their grades for 4th quarter.
Thursday, May 21st: Our graduation walk activity will begin promptly at 10:00 am in the west parking lot. Please go to our school website to find your time slot for entry. Entry is based on your last name. For safety and traffic control reasons I need you to follow those time slots, thanks in advance! No parking will be allowed in the west lot during the hours of 6:00 am-3:00 pm as we will setting up for and conducting our graduation ceremony. Remember, one car per graduate with family members in the car to cheer them on. Seniors, you may decorate your car if you choose and we are requesting that the graduate sits in the front passenger seat for easy access to the curb. Seniors will be given a card and a pen to write his or her name on as you would like it read as you receive your diploma cover. The rest of the information will be used to send your pictures and diploma to you. Please fill it out thoroughly and legibly.
We will also be handing out K-Crest and K-Activity certificates to seniors who have met the following qualifications: (During a traditional year, this would have been done at our Senior Banquet)
K-Crest Award –
An award based on four years of activity at KHS. The K-Crest Award is the highest honor given by Kearns High staff to a student. It is an award which reflects service and activity at Kearns High School over a four-year period. Each senior who receives this award must have served the school in a minimum of two unrelated areas such as sports, leadership, service groups, and clubs. Points are earned and accumulated over four years for the student’s efforts and the award is based on those points, not solely on being awarded the K-Activity award in previous years. If a student has ever received an “F” or “0” in any of their four years at KHS he/she will be ineligible for this award.
K-Activity Award –
An award based on one year of activity at KHS The K-Activity Award is offered to students who have dedicated many extra hours to school service and participation. This award is based on one year’s activities and is given to freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior students who have been enrolled full time for the entire year. In order to receive this one-year award, a student must have received strong recommendations from the sponsors of at least two unrelated activities to be considered. Good scholarship and citizenship are additional factors which help determine award recipients. Having ever received an “F” or “0” in the year will automatically disqualify a student for this award.
Again, we WILL NOT be collecting any paper packets, Chromebooks, textbooks, or distributing work on graduation day. This collection will resume on Friday, May 22 from 8-2.
Parents, it is your decision if you would like your graduate to wear a mask or not. Safety is our primary goal.
Unified Police is asking that you enter the parking lot at the south driver’s ed entry corner. Once you enter they will direct you where you need to go.
Bright orange tape will be placed six feet apart on the concrete for graduates to stand on and move forward as the line moves by the building. Your family car will follow you along the curb as you move. A senior sign and a block “K” will be outside the building for your first photo opportunity.
The card you fill out will be given to Mr. Ashton or Ms. Tupouniua, who will read your name over the loudspeaker as you walk toward me. I will extend my arm out with your diploma cover in my hand for you to grab. At that time your family can take your second photo, trying to allow for social distance. Upon completion of the graduate receiving his or her diploma cover from me the graduate will return to the car.
Your teachers will also be present cheering you on if they are able to.
You and your family will leave the west parking lot and turn right onto Cougar Way where you will make a quick right into the north parking lot. Jostens will be staged on the curb to assist with your gown return. Seniors will keep the cap and tassel .
Lastly, since we have no control over the weather, if we need to move this celebration inside the building I will send out another plan at 8:00 am on May 21st if necessary. It will also be posted on the school website. The TIME blocks will remain the same… Let’s celebrate loudly this week for great weather.
“Once a Cougar, Always a Cougar!”
Thanks for your continued support!
Respectfully,
Principal Loo
