Parents and Students:
Welcome back to our “New Normal” school year. Folks, I realize that there are still some concerns surrounding Covid-19, but we have been deemed “Essential” and are thereby directed to open our “face to face” learning platform at school. As you are aware, we will be running two in-person A and B days during a traditional week. Please follow the A/B calendar posted to the district website. Fridays are included in this A/B calendar, but will be distance learning time for teachers to reach out to students and for students to reach out to them via Canvas. As required by our district, teachers will be in the building working in their departments and supporting your students learning through the online Canvas platform. Below are a few things to keep in mind as we open school tomorrow:
-Doors will now be open daily at 7:00 am. Special needs bused students will be met by our adult staff members and escorted in the building upon their arrival.
-Breakfast will be served from 7:00 am-7:25 am Monday -Thursday. Every Friday that we are scheduled for a school day, all Granite School District students may pick up a breakfast and a lunch from 10:30-11:30. On Fridays students need to enter at the east cafeteria doors. Students will be given a lunch card tomorrow and must have the card with them to access their meals. Meals “will not be given out freely” as they were in the spring. Please pay for your lunches online through PayPams, or apply for free or reduced lunch here: https://www.myschoolapps.com/.
-If you have not registered and are a returning student at KHS or continuing student from our feeder junior highs, enter at the west doors and you will be given a packet to fill out either in your car or at home. Return the packet upon completion and, depending on lines and crowds, you may have to wait or a counselor will reach out to you the next day. Students new to the Kearns area will be given the same instructions as continuing students above, but will need to meet with our Registrar to receive a student number so the counselors can create a schedule for you.
-Parents, per our Governor’s orders, while on school property students, parents, and staff must wear a mask. This policy will be enforced by myself and my assistants. Also, per dress code and district policy, “NO bandana masks will be acceptable at school”. If students do not have a mask in the building we will provide them with a reusable mask. It will be their responsibility to continue to bring and wear this mask after that.
-We will, to the best of our ability, be practicing social distancing with your students while they are in our building. We will be reminding students not to congregate and to keep moving when the bell rings while students are traveling for one class to the next. Please assist us with your students by reminding them about “wearing their masks and social distancing”. The only time masks can be off is during lunch, however, the mask MUST be put back on immediately after they are done with lunch.
-During the last ten minutes of class students will be asked to wipe off their personal learning spaces. This practice will be enforced throughout our district.
– Counselors will be assisting new students with building schedules this week in office, so we need our returning students to set appointments for assistance. Those students and parents who would like to request a schedule change will need to sign up for an appointment to visit with their counselor by phone or Zoom. To schedule an appointment, please visit the Counseling Center Page on our Kearns High website for access to the link.
-Monday-Thursday the building will be open from 7:00 am -3:00 pm during the first week of school to take care of registration and Chromebook needs. Please watch the weekend updates as this time could change depending on the Covid data and direction we receive from the District and the CDC. Students will not be allowed to just “hang out” after school hours. We will be directing them to return home as soon as they have finished any required business in the school.
-Distance learners should have picked up Chromebooks last Friday. If you missed this pick-up time you can come on Monday – Thursday of this week from 2:30 – 3:00 to pick one up. If you have a device at home you do not need to use one of ours. If, for any reason, you were not added to our original distance learning list you have been or will be directed to go to your 4A class to pick up your Chromebook. Please try to come at the beginning of class (around 1:00) to pick it up.
-Chromebooks will be distributed to our “face to face” learners during 4A on Monday. We are asking every student to use our provided devices as they can be monitored during class time. It is each students responsibility to take care of the device and to come with the Chromebook charged and ready to use every day. 4A Seminary students will come to the building on Monday to receive their devices and 4A GTI and home release students can come to the library to pick them up. Please see the Chromebook section under student resources on our website for troubleshooting and login tips.
-Distance learners who have been directed to pick up textbooks by a teacher can do so this week (Monday – Thursday) from 2:30-3:00 in the library. Please know exactly what textbook you are there to pick up and we will take care of you.
-Our Media Center will be open for a maximum of twenty five students to check-out books and work on homework before and after school and during lunch. Students will have to wear masks at all times and must wear our provided non-latex gloves to look through the books. Your students cannot spend any “off periods” in the library. There will be no gaming or hanging out allowed. Each book will be allowed to sit for a week before it can be checked out to another student.
-Athletes will be following protocols with their coaches and, until further notice, the only functions we are hosting after school are UHSAA sports practices.
Please call the school if you have any questions. Thanks for your patience and support as we all attempt to navigate our “NEW NORMAL learning platforms.
Respectfully,
Principal Loo
