Dear Kearns High Parents and Families,
We are deeply saddened to inform you of the death of one of our students. We offer our sincere condolences to Riley Staples family and friends and ask that you please respect their privacy during this difficult time. We do not currently have any additional information to share regarding his passing.
If your student has been affected by this tragedy and would like to meet with a member of our crisis team, please reach out to your student’s counselor. Crisis team members will be available at the school the rest of this week and as long as necessary to support our students.
You are your student’s most important resource and support as they cope with this loss. Be aware that your student may also be exposed to rumors or incorrect information regarding this death from their peers and social media. During this time of great loss, many of you may feel many emotions including sadness, confusion, grief, and possibly anger. Our current pandemic will make familiar ways of processing and grieving with friends more challenging. It is very important that anyone who is feeling sad or is struggling please reach out for support. The SafeUT app is an excellent resource providing 24/7 access to chat with a crisis counselor. Please make sure your student is aware of this resource through the mobile app or on the web at https://healthcare.utah.edu/uni/safe-ut/. Please watch for the warning signs as indicated in the attached handout and you can contact the Salt Lake County Crisis Line at (801) 587-3000.
Going forward, if your student needs ANY help or support, please contact their school counselor.
Respectfully,
Principal Loo
