Did you ever want to create a device that desalinates water? Have you ever wondered whether patients who have lost their sense of smell prefer certain flavors of food? Now is the time to solve an unsolved problem and answer a scientific question!
This year the Morningside STEM Fair will be January 10, 2024! Projects should be submitted by January 9, 2024, although some teachers may have an earlier due date.
We would like to encourage all students to do a scientific experiment or engineering project! Some teachers may require STEM Fair participation. Please check with your teacher if you are not sure if your child is required to complete a project.
How can you help students participate in the STEM Fair?
- Help your child discuss various ideas for projects.
- Review the Handbook (see link below) and read through the rules and recommended format.
- If your idea involves human or animal test subjects, pay particular attention to the Safety Guidelines in the Handbook. Also note that bacteria and mold cannot be grown at home.
- Watch STEM related videos with your child.
- Help your student perform Background Research, formulate a Question, then come up with a Hypothesis based on what you learned from the background research.
- Help your child write out Procedures to be followed, conduct the experiment, display the Data/Results (using graphs where appropriate), and explain the significance of the results in a Conclusion section.
Trifold cardboard display boards are now available. Please have your student pick one up from the office if planning to do a STEM project.
For Grades 1-4, teachers will be responsible for ensuring that the experiments are appropriate and do not violate safety rules outlined in the Handbook.
For Grades K-3: Projects should be submitted by January 9th, although teachers may set an earlier due date.
For Grades 4-5: Students will be interviewed and projects will be judged on January 10th.
For Fifth Grade participants:
Students must submit a Pre-Approval form with all appropriate signatures before beginning the experiment or project.
Students should record all data in a Notebook and submit it with the final project.
