2019-2020 PTA PROGRAMS
Reflections: The National P.T.A. sponsors an annual Reflections contest to enrich arts curriculum by encouraging student exploration of various art mediums, such as; music, visual art, photography, film production, dance and literature. Parent volunteer help is needed to promote the contest and judge student entries.
This year’s theme is “Look Within”
S.T.E.M Fair: The S.T.E.M Fair promotes a hands-on approach to science experimentation. Students are encouraged to create their own project, to be displayed at the S.T.E.M. Fair. Some may further compete on a district and state level. Parent volunteers help facilitate the fair, and judge student projects.
5th Grade Promotion: The 5th Grade Promotion includes a year-end activity, and promotion program to celebrate the elementary achievement of our 5th graders. Parent volunteers help plan the event, and chaperon the students.
EDUCATION & FAMILY LIFE
Family Activities: Every year the PTA schedules activities for the entire family to enjoy. This year’s activities will include the following; Back to School Movie Night, Blockwalk Carnival, and two Classic Skate Nights.
Author Studies: This program promotes a love of reading and exposure to new books. Parent volunteers bring this program to life by spotlighting an author each month for the grade/classroom of their choice. Lesson materials are available in the library.
Junior Achievement: This program supports social studies curriculum with a focus on civic and government services, through lessons on financial literacy. Parent volunteers present 5 prepared lessons to the grade/teacher they volunteer for.
Literacy Night/Week: This is an evening or weeklong event where students and their families participate in a variety of reading activities, to promote literacy.
Service Club: This program includes activities designed to engage students in community-centered service projects. This year’s Service Club will take place after school on the 2nd Friday of the month in; October, December, and April, and the 3rd Friday of the month in February. Parent volunteers help coordinate the activity, and assist students with service projects.
Dance Nights: This year the PTA will host two dance nights for the first time ever at Morningside! The Dad/Daughter dance will take place January 30th, with the Mom/Son dance and game night following on February 27th. These nights are meant to highlight the special caregivers in all of our student’s lives.
Books & Bagels: This fun event will occur monthly, with one grade invited each month. Caregivers and students are invited to come to school for a light breakfast and time to read with their child, as well as get to know other parents. Parent volunteers help coordinate the food and facilities.
Book Fair: Morningside PTA provides volunteers for two Book Fairs, which coincide with SEP Conferences in the fall and spring. These fairs provide an opportunity for students to buy quality books, while helping purchase new books for our library and classrooms.
SAFETY & HEALTH
Red Ribbon Week: This coincides with the national campaign for a “Drug-Free America” in addition to including important information for anti-bullying and safe practices for internet/app use. Parent volunteers coordinate a week of activities to promote healthy lifestyles.
Emergency Preparedness: Parent volunteers help coordinate an emergency plan for each classroom at Morningside, and may help establish an emergency telephone tree to contact families if the need arises.
Vision Screening: Volunteers conduct the annual screening as directed by Granite School District. Parents assist students in the process, and facilitate each class.
Maturation Program: This program is for 5th grade students and their caregivers. Parent volunteers coordinate speakers and assemble hygiene kits.
